Global Entrepreneurship Week: Algeria Celebrates its Innovation, Ambition and Drive

GEW in Algeria unites 250,000 participants across all 58 cities in a wave of innovation, ambition and entrepreneurial drive. In 2024, 6,212 activities occurred nationwide, from pitch competitions and startup showcases to policy roundtables and hands-on workshops, highlighting the energy, creativity and resilience of Algeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. GEW is backed by over 840 partners and the patronage of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-Enterprises.

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is an international celebration  that promotes entrepreneurship and innovation as a driving force for growth and progress all across the globe. Held every year in November since 2008, it provides a forum for millions of individuals and acts as a platform to foster collaboration, inspire entrepreneurial thinking, and strengthen local and global ecosystems.

Algeria stood out during GEW 2024, showcasing its growing entrepreneurial momentum by achieving 2nd place in the global ranking. Hosted and coordinated by GEN Algeria and supported by a large network of partners nationwide, last year’s edition united creators, innovators and changemakers from every corner of the country.

Over the course of the week, Algeria hosted a total of 6,212 activities across all 58 cities. Uniting over 245 000 participants (including students, entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and industry leaders) in a wave of innovation, hard work and development.

The events ranged from high-impact panel discussions featuring successful entrepreneurs and business leaders, workshops and training sessions covering crucial topics for entrepreneurial development, to pitch competitions, startup showcases and policy roundtables. Each of these activities aligns with one common goal: providing the youth with the opportunities and equipping them with the tools necessary to transform their ideas into successful businesses.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week: an opportunity to turn the ideas of young people into real projects,” said Mr. Kamal Moula - President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council during the GEW Algeria 2024 opening ceremony in CIC, Alger.

Key Contributions + Partnerships

GEW 2024 featured a panel of above 840 partners that formed a strong support network throughout the race, including many governmental organizations such as NESDA, ANGEM, Algeria Venture and Auto-Entrepreneur, highlighted by the patronage of the ministry of economy, knowledge, startups and micro-entreprises.

In this context, the ministry of startups played a crucial role in cultivating a thriving startup ecosystem by providing resources and substantial funding, networking opportunities and mentorship programs, ensuring that entrepreneurs have access to the capital they need to grow their businesses.

Their collaboration with GEN further amplifies these efforts on an international stage, encouraging local and global startups to bloom and leaving a significant mark on the startup community.

Opening Ceremony

The GEW 2024 was officially launched in Algeria on 18/11/2024 at the “Centre International des Conférences Abdelatif-Rahal” (CIC Alger).

The ceremony started with an inspiring speech by Mr Yacine Walid - Ministry of knowledge, economy, startups and micro-entreprises- on the occasion of global entrepreneurship week. followed by Mr. Kamal Moula - President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council, on the role of entrepreneurship in supporting the Algerian economy. Both offered an overview of the startup ecosystem in Algeria and what is needed for the country to become a leader in entrepreneurship in Africa.

Quoting Mr Yacine Walid - Ministry of knowledge, economy, startups and micro-entreprises. "Algeria aims to become a hub for entrepreneurship."

Mr. Zerouki Sid Ali-president of A-Venture, presented an overview of the Global Entrepreneurship Week program, which involved multiple activities spread over 5 days. 

The ceremony hosted numerous CEOS, business men and government organizations as well, who provided valuable advice and support for entrepreneurs.

In conclusion, global entrepreneurship week 2024 marked a pivotal moment for Algeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. emphasizing the importance of a culture of innovation and active community engagement  in building the future of Algerian societal and economic development and achieving sustainable growth.
