Purpose built by Tatweer Misr in the heart of Bloomfields, an interconnected, master planned green neighborhood in Mostakbal City on the east side of Cairo; GEN@Bloomfields is GEN’s first campus in the MENA region. When complete, it will serve as a central hub for entrepreneurship stakeholders. Entrepreneurs will find world-class business development resources including technology labs, state-of-the-art workstations, workshop rooms, co-working spaces, a commercial kitchen, and more. In addition, entrepreneurs will have access to a diverse team of experienced entrepreneurs, mentors and funders, all under one roof, who can be called upon for advice and support at each development stage of their venture.
Egypt’s entrepreneurship ecosystem has grown significantly in recent years and continues to evolve rapidly. Egypt’s opening economy has created a dynamic where young people are thinking about ways to create and control their destinies – unleashing innovation and their entrepreneurial potential. At the same time, enthusiasm for startups in the MENA region is burgeoning, creating an opportunity for Egypt to serve a regional leader.
With two global trends playing out in Egypt – the rapid pace with which work changing (freelancing and small business formation are surging and projected to accelerate) and companies are seeking to be nimble by remaining asset-light and commitment-free – GEN@Bloomfields is designed as the hub of the ultimate space for new types of workers and firms.
During a design thinking workshop on building world-class startup campuses at the 2019 Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Bahrain, GEN posed the question, “What do future student entrepreneurs need to succeed?” The participants focused on the need to facilitate access to networks of experienced, knowledgeable, and successful entrepreneurs and entrepreneur supporters (e.g., mentors, investors, connectors) who are able to inspire, educate, and nurture the next generation. The participants stressed that being connected to the right person at the right time is often critical to the success of a new firm.
To this end, GEN@Bloomfields is being designed to:
- Equip the next generation with the knowledge and networks
- Be a space for convening those who participate in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, bridging gaps, providing new knowledge about markets
- Facilitate connections and communication among startup founders and entrepreneur supporters
- Provide a supportive environment in which entrepreneurs will be better able to access expertise, know-how, and training.
Taken together, GEN@Bloomfields will foster a flourishing, innovative society through entrepreneurship, capitalize on the urbanization in East Cairo, offer startups and SMEs the support and solutions need to scale from the idea stage to commercialization, and have significant and enduring impact on entrepreneurship in Egypt, the MENA region and contribute to building one global ecosystem.
