The Global Entrepreneurship Network recognizes excellence in entrepreneurship, policymaking, investor support programs and research during the Compass Awards ceremony at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress. The awards honor individuals and organizations who make a difference in helping entrepreneurs start and scale around the world.

Due to the pandemic, the upcoming Compass Awards ceremony at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in March 2022 will factor in efforts spanning 2019 and 2020.

The nomination deadline has been extended to 11:59 pm GMT on November 30, 2021.

GEN COUNTRY OF THE YEAR

The Compass Award for GEN Country of the Year is given to the highest performing Global Entrepreneurship Network national affiliate in terms of national ecosystems.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Plan: Quality and depth of strategy and business plan for first year of operations
  • National Ecosystem Leadership: Developing a strong, diverse Board of Directors while obtaining public buy-in and support from more than 75% of the country’s leading entrepreneurial support organizations and ecosystem actors.
  • Growth Rate: Demonstrated growth in terms of programs, people served, revenues and any other metrics developed by national leadership.
  • Training, Planning and Metrics: Thorough participation in GEN training sessions and tracking performance against an evidence-based strategic plan.
  • Brand Alignment + Discipline: Aligning all efforts under the GEN national affiliate brand while ensuring adherence to the high quality brand standards on all public-facing collateral (including the national affiliate website on the GEN platform).
  • Program Implementation: Demonstrated implementation of GEN global programming as well as innovative new local or national programs.
  • Engagement: Level of participation in official GEN communications channels and contribution to knowledge / idea sharing with other GEN members.

 


 

ONE GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM AWARD

The Compass Award for One Global Ecosystem is given to the individual, organization or community that has had the largest impact in reaching across national borders and connecting a broad array of stakeholders who help entrepreneurs start and scale new companies around the world.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Success in convening large-scale gatherings (live or virtual) or communities that engage a broad cross-section of ecosystem stakeholders from economies of all sizes
  • Facilitating collaboration among diverse types of ecosystem leaders
  • Engaging non-traditional audiences, under-represented communities and opening paths to a diverse array of geographies and demographics

 


 

GEW CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Compass Award for Global Entrepreneurship Week Campaign of the Year is given to the host organization that ran the best overall campaign–demonstrating national scale, involvement of a diverse collection of ecosystem leaders, creative ways to reach new audiences and impact in terms of fueling public involvement in partner programs and other opportunities within the current ecosystem.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Scale of the campaign (e.g. geographic reach engaging communities throughout the country, number of partners, number of activities)
  • Creativity and innovation of the campaign
  • Engagement of influential brands and VIPs
  • Level of visibility and awareness
  • Demonstrated positive impact for partners and on participants
  • Engaging non-traditional audiences and under-represented communities
  • Campaign presence on official site, adherence to GEW Global guidelines and communication with the global campaign management

 


 

EWC CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Compass Award for the Entrepreneurship World Cup Campaign of the Year is given to the national organizer that ran the best overall campaign, demonstrating ability to build EWC ecosystem partnerships across the country, attract and support a high volume of strong applicants and host a national final on brand.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Total number of applications
  • Quality of finalists from all three stages-Idea Stage, Early Stage + Growth Stage
  • Brand penetration and adherence to EWC brand requirements
  • Participation of startups in EWC Accelerates
  • Formation of a leadership team
  • Engagement of a diverse collection of recognized ecosystem partners
  • Creative ways of reaching new audiences
  • Ingenuity in overcoming the challenges faced by the 2020 pandemic

 


 

GEN STARTER AWARD

The Compass Award for GEN Starters is given to the highest performing or most promising starter in the GEN Starters Club, a community of founders selected from a range of programs intended to have a direct impact on the  including the Entrepreneurship World Cup, Startup Huddle like EWC, Startup Huddle, GEW, GEN Campus, GEN Space, and GEN Accelerates.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Promising: Most promising member most likely to succeed as an entrepreneur in the long run.
  • Performance: Founder who achieved the highest amount of growth since joining the club based on reported GEN Starters Club data or EWC platform data or other program data reporting platform.
  • Unsung heroes: Member who has been least recognized for outstanding performance
  • GEN Starters Contributor: Most active and impactful supporter of the future of the GEN Starters Club

 


 

BARRIER BREAKER AWARD

The Compass Award for Barrier Breakers recognizes the member of the Global Entrepreneurship Network who has demonstrated the greatest commitment and achievement in breaking down persistent and systemic obstacles--creating pathways to entrepreneurship that empower non-traditional audiences and under-represented communities.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Demonstrated impact in lifting up entrepreneurs among marginalized communities including those discriminated against due to their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality or any other factor
  • Helping overcome skill deficiencies through training and mentorship programs
  • Increasing access to technological resources and closing the digital divide--increasingly important with the rise in remote collaboration and distance learning due to the COVID19 pandemic

 


 

POLICY CHAMPION AWARD

The Compass Award for Policy Champions is given to the member of the GEN Policy community who has made the most significant contribution to advancing efforts to remove barriers to entrepreneurship through new policies, programs or changes to regulations at either the local, national or global level.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Driving policymaking that considers entrepreneurs in recovery efforts
  • Commitment to evidence-based policymaking
  • Engagement with GEN national affiliate or leadership and GEN’s ecosystem partners and entrepreneurs in policy deliberations
  • Ecosystem-wide recognition or proven impact in removing barriers to entrepreneurship through smart policies
  • Ingenuity of recommendations and ideas
  • Level of engagement with the GEN Policy global community through communication, contribution to the SNAP portal (Atlas) or use of ideas, and/or policy dialogues
  • Seniority of government engagement

 


 

INVESTOR CHAMPION AWARD

The Compass Award for Investor Champions recognizes the GEN Invest community or Global Business Angels Network member who contributed most to advancing the interests of investors and the new firms they enable.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Success in building, guiding or managing an angel network or investor training program to help advance cross-border investing or increase local investor capacity
  • Engagement with GEN’s entrepreneurs supported through the GEN Starters Club, Entrepreneurship World Cup, Startup Huddle or other GEN programs interfacing directly with entrepreneurs
  • Contributions to growing the GEN Invest community or Global Business Angels Network

 


 

RESEARCH CHAMPION AWARD

The Compass Award for Research Champions is given to the GEN Research community member that has contributed actionable insights that have translated into better-informed policies or programs advancing entrepreneurship or that have simplified entrepreneurial support organization and program performance measurement.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Commitment to translating research into actionable recommendations, particularly those entered into GEN Atlas, a research and policy portal to track effective approaches around the world to advance entrepreneurship
  • Demonstrated interest and uptake from policymakers and ESOs
  • Impact of research in driving national GEN strategy and programs
  • Leadership in driving new knowledge creation that fills knowledge gaps and needs

 


 

ENTERPRISE REGISTRATION + REGULATION AWARD

The Compass Award for Enterprise Registration + Regulation is given to the government that makes the most effort to make it easy and attractive for entrepreneurs to register their businesses and comply with laws and regulations.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Simplified administrative procedures related to business registration and regulation
  • Made the most progress toward earning a perfect rating on GER website by clearly listing what to do, how to do it with a user-friendly interface
  • Made the most progress toward becoming a 'single window' that provides one online application for all mandatory registrations, easy digital payment and certificates confirming successful registrations.
  • Demonstrated collaboration across government agencies to provide the user with a seamless, integrated experience.

 


 

INSPIRATION + RESILIENCE AWARD

The Compass Award for Inspiration + Resilience recognizes the member of the Global Entrepreneurship Network who has performed admirably in the face of adversity--adapting to overcome considerable challenges such as natural disasters, armed conflict, political strife, global pandemic or any similar catastrophic situation.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order): 

  • Demonstrated persistence in the face of significant challenges 
  • Examples of innovation / ingenuity in approaching the challenge
  • Level of success and examples impact 

 


 

ECOSYSTEM CHAMPION AWARD

The Compass Award for Ecosystem Champions is given to an individual or organization who has contributed most to driving positive, long-term and inclusive growth of their local ecosystem through front-line programs and educational efforts to advance innovation and support startups.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Impact: Demonstrated impactful outputs such as implementing new programs, conducting innovative research, releasing data-driven recommendation or other tangible efforts
  • Connectivity: Demonstrated efforts to increase the rate and frequency of connections made among ecosystem members.
  • Diversity: Demonstrated efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the ecosystem--including economic diversification as well as engaging non-traditional audiences and under-represented communities.
  • Creativity: Finds innovative ways to keep community engaged and motivated.
  • Mentorship: Active and consistent engagement with startups to build their entrepreneurial skills and capacity
  • Resourcefulness: Finds resources and collaborators to connect with and support members of their ecosystem
  • Advocacy: Spreads great ideas and elevates awareness about qualities unique to their ecosystem

 


 

GEN ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

The Compass Award for GEN Rookie of the Year recognizes a new member of a Global Entrepreneurship Network program for their contributions to advancing entrepreneurship in the world through GEN.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Demonstrated significant impact or level of success using a GEN program in their community or field
  • Demonstrated thought leadership
  • Reach into non-traditional audiences and under-represented communities

 


 

BRAND CHAMPION AWARD

The Compass Award for Brand Champions recognizes the member of the GlobalEntrepreneurship Network that best embodies and reflects the GEN brand in a positive visual way–implementing impactful programs and initiatives within the compass family to represent the intersection of ideas, cultures and information and symbolizing its inclusive international reach.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Program discipline and implementation-adhering to methodology for existing programs
  • Program creativity and innovation for introducing new programs
  • Brand discipline
  • Brand penetration + awareness
  • Overall design quality of external-facing materials

 


 

CHAMPION CATALYZER FOR ACTIVITIES AWARD

The Compass Award for Champion Catalyzers (Activities) recognizes Global Entrepreneurship Week host organizations that are able to generate a substantial amount of activity--engaging a broad cross-section of the population during their national campaigns.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Total number of GEW activities reported
  • Number of GEW activities reported per capita
  • Demonstrated buzz/hype around Global Entrepreneurship Week campaign in terms of social media and/or traditional media
  • Any globally highlighted major events
  • Utilized partner outreach/ ongoing activity to maximize the number of events
  • Significant events or activities engaging non-traditional audiences or under-represented communities

 


 

CHAMPION CATALYZER FOR PARTNERSHIPS AWARD

The Compass Award for Champion Catalyzers (Partnerships) recognizes Global Entrepreneurship WeekHosts that best demonstrate the ability to scale their national campaigns by catalyzing organizations, increasing impact and reaching a large cross-section of the population.

Factors considered in the selection of the winner of this award include (in no particular order):

  • Total number of partners
  • Number of partners per capita
  • Engagement of recognizable and/or influential brands as sponsors or partners
  • Partnerships that reach non-traditional audiences or under-represented communities
  • Demonstrated evidence of impact on partners’ as measured by repeat engagement and growth
