Understanding Developing Core Values in the UK Drinks Industry

For Ian O’Donohue, Managing Director of Harry Brompton’s Ice Tea, taking part in Virgin Unite’s Action Network was essential. It made him and his team aware of what core values and it helped them develop these values into their everyday approach to work. Here he talks about what he learnt from it and how his company has benefited since.

Tudor Drinks was founded in 2013 and is a small British drinks company on a mission to introduce the world to proper British Ice Tea. We produce Harry Brompton’s London Ice Tea, which is a premium line of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic ice teas. We have grown rapidly from brewing tiny batches on the kitchen table to selling across 15 countries and in some of the finest outlets in the world. Our goal is to make Harry Brompton’s the world’s leading brand of premium ready to drink ice tea.

The opportunity to be coached through a part of my business journey that I didn’t really understand and wouldn’t have otherwise focused on, was hugely appealing in the Action Network. I didn’t have any core values set up or an understanding of what they were in the first instance, so the experience was a real eye opener.

The core values we’ve since implemented include treating everyone with respect and treating the public as though they are new friends to be made; be confident in everything you do and inspire confidence in those around you; think big, but be nimble. Do what you believe to be right and to make yourself and the company proud; roll with the punches and never give in, we didn’t come here to lose; we are on a mission to introduce the world to proper British ice tea, so let’s enjoy it as much as they do; be a bit more Harry everyday…if in doubt, what would Harry do?

The project taught us to be open minded to guidance and to do an exercise in company and personal development. It also taught me the importance of taking some time out to think about our business and our goals, and how best to guide the team.

I enjoyed taking the time to really think about the core values and having fun with the team coming up with them. Seeing them up on the office wall everyday is hugely positive for us all.
