The Head of the Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit at eThekwini Municipality's, Mr. Thulani Nzama has risen through the ranks of the city government having started his career as a Market Supervisor 21 years ago.
Being at the helm of one of the City's critical Units that aim to contribute towards local economic growth through integrated business support and promotion of Durban as a tourist destination, Nzama pledged his commitment to placing eThekwini on the global map.
Officially appointed to his current role in October 2018, Nzama's aims to fast-track is enterprise development and facilitation of linkages between small and big businesses. Nzama works to ensure that existing interventions around access to markets and finance are strengthened. Also, another major plan for the Unit is to focus on the newly established Agribusiness Department and the implementation of the Radical Economic Transformation Framework. The aim is to create opportunities for Black Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises to play a meaningful role in the production and supply value chain.
After Nzama's employment as a Markets Supervisor, he was appointed as a Manager for street trading and was later promoted to a Senior Manager position for informal trade. From there, Nzama was appointed as the Deputy Head for the Unit for about eight years before being appointed as the Unit Head in 2018. Departments under the Unit are Bulk Market, Small, Medium and Macro Enterprise Development, Informal Economy, Licensing and Retail Markets, Agribusiness and Durban Tourism.
Nzama holds a National Diploma and Bachelor of Technology qualification in Public Management – both obtained at the Durban University of Technology. He also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship obtained from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
