GEW Global Partner Youth Business International (YBI) brought its sixth biennial global conference to Mexico City. The YBI Global Forum is uniting some of the world’s leading youth entrepreneurship organisations to promote youth entrepreneurship and discuss the latest approaches to supporting young entrepreneurs through access to credit and volunteer business mentoring in nearly 40 countries.
As one of the GEW Global Partners, YBI have provided valuable support to the campaign, galvanizing their networks in countries such as India, Canada and the Ukraine to become as involved as possible with the campaign. They were also able to publish a paper for GEW, entitled “Youth Entrepreneurship: Recommendations for Action.” Addressing the growing numbers of unemployed young people in a time of economic slowdown, the paper presented five actions each for governments, businesses, and civil society organisations to support young entrepreneurship and is a valuable resource for GEW Hosts.
The Global Forum included a session devoted to Global Entrepreneurship Week where Hosts from Saudi Arabia, Canada and Barbados outlined their involvement with GEW, how the campaign has benefitted their work and ways in which other members might become involved.
The Forum is themed around the tagline ‘Networking for Impact’ and is being hosted by Jóvenes Empresarios por Mexico (JEMAC). The week will culminate with the Entrepreneur of the Year awards dinner, where four entrepreneurs will compete to win the title. Those on the shortlist will also be put to the public vote in the People’s Choice Awards. Last year’s competition saw YBI and GEW collaborate culminating in over 20,000 people from around the world logging on to the GEW website to vote, with Ghada Baaqil of Saudi Arabia taking the prize. The awards have a tendency to spotlight some fascinating entrepreneurial stories, none more so than Juan Ramón Nuñez who became something of a national celebrity in his native Argentina following the awards.
Key speakers during the week included:
- Rob Pitfield: Group Head International Banking, Scotiabank
- Sriyan De Silva Wijeyeratne: Country Manager, Microsoft Sri Lanka
- David Stewart-Patterson: Executive Vice-President, Canadian Council of Chief Executives
- Jim Goggin: Regional Director, USAID Eastern Caribbean
- Debra Askanase, Social Media Strategist
Stay tuned to find out how you can participate in the People’s Choice Awards. You can also keep track of all the latest on YBI’s blog.
