Beyond the Breakpoint: Supporting Entrepreneurs in Distress

Session Description

Entrepreneurship is often celebrated for its highs—funding wins, rapid scaling, and bold ideas. But what happens when things go wrong? When a founder is in crisis, the journey becomes lonelier, and the ecosystem begins to fade. In this session, we explore what real support looks like for entrepreneurs who are stumbling.

Join Dana Redford, Lead Educator of the Early Warning Mentor Academy, an EU initiative to help companies at risk of failure.

Expect frank reflections, practical insights, and a compelling case for building ecosystems that support the full entrepreneurial life cycle—not just the success stories. Participants will learn:

  • ways to embed crisis diagnostics into existing services;
  • how integrate mentors into wider support networks; and
  • about publicly available resources on Early Warning Mentoring.

This session is ideal for ecosystem builders, policymakers, support organizations, and anyone who would like to explore support mechanisms for at-risk founders and build a “full-cycle” ecosystem.

Key Takeaways
• Collaboration is Paramount: Bringing together stakeholders from government, industry, education, and non-profits is essential for ecosystems to grow, flourish, scale, and create impact.
• Define a Shared Vision and Purpose: A united vision is critical for aligning diverse players and activities. Community buy-in is necessary for this vision to be truly owned and built together.
• Tailor to Local Uniqueness: Rather than mimicking other successful regions (like Silicon Valley), focus on understanding and leveraging your community's unique assets, culture, and strengths.
• Measure Impact with Data and Story: Quantifying outcomes (stats) is necessary, especially for funders like government. However, coupling data with compelling stories is crucial to demonstrate why the numbers matter and to communicate value to diverse stakeholders.
• Start by Listening: Before building programs or injecting resources, deeply understand the community's needs, culture, barriers, and opportunities by listening to entrepreneurs, ecosystem builders, educators, and community members.
