Opening Event Global Entrepreneurship Week: Boosting entrepreneurship in Belgium through targeted measures

The federal government has taken several initiatives over the past few years to stimulate investments in start - ups and promote entrepreneurship. In July 2015, the tax shelter for investments in start - ups was launched and in February of this year, the tax shelter was extended to cover investments through crowdfunding and a legal framework for crowdfunding platforms was put in place. In March a law was passed for the creation of Starter Funds which will also benefit from the tax shelter for starters. All these measures have boosted fundraising for start - up companies. However, it is equally important to ensure that sufficient capital is available for the next phase when start - ups become more mature and develop into scale - ups with the ambi tion to grow their product or service internationally. Therefore, Minister of Finance Johan Van Overtveldt recently proposed a set of new measures aimed at facilitating fundraising for scale - ups and growth companies. These measures include the introductio n of a tax shelter for growth companies, the creation of a scale - ups ecosystem and making the Private Privak/pricaf privée investment vehicle more attractive for venture capital investments.
