The Smart Urban Technology Challenge 2018

Smart Urban Technology Challenge (SUTC) is an initiative of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) with an aspiration to foster entrepreneurial spirit amongst the Nepalese community to identify and solve problems related to urban development. The platforms will be a host to over 100 innovative ideas that will be directed to solve the problems faced by Kathmandu metropolis.

 

Each of the solution will have inherent technology element that will support KMC to promote a culture of adopting smart urban technology solutions. The technology used in the challenge does not necessarily have to be hi-tech but could be simple enhancements of process and practices for better and tangible results.

The challenge is focused on the following four categories related to urban development. The categories have been selected based on priorities of KMC as well as based on suggestion from experts working on respective areas.

 

Community and Environment

The solutions should serve the Kathmandu municipality city dwellers in making their communities strong and better with better to environment to live in.

  • Urban waste Management
  • Environment protection
  • Disaster management and preparedness
  • Pollution Abatement (Air, River, Smoke)
  • Urban agriculture (terrace farming, vertical farming, etc.)
  • Preserving historical landmarks
  • Visual pollution Management
  • Hoarding board Management
  • Provisioning of night time services (food, medicines, transportation, etc. ), etc.

 

 

Urban Infrastructure

 

The solutions should provide innovative ways to build, maintain and use public infrastructures for the general public.

  • Public Infrastructure (lights, roads, walkways, sewerage, etc. ) maintenance
  • Public transportation and traffic management
  • Parking management
  • Public toilets
  • Protection and rejuvenation of public spaces and parks
  • Alternative Energy
  • Footpath and road light management, etc.

 

Municipal Community Services

 

The solutions should strengthen the community services provided by local government to general public in efficient ways possible.

  • Public Security improvisation
  • Supply Chain Management of community goods
  • Quality Check Processes
  • Health services (primary, secondary, tertiary)
  • Public education school management
  • Public safety
  • Community pharmacies
  • Urban employment, etc.

 

Metropolitan Public Administration and Management

The solutions should make the municipal administrative works efficient.

  • Civic engagement and feedback / grievance management
  • Metropolitan process digitization and automation
  • Urban governance
  • Urban mapping
  • Assignment of house addresses
  • Metropolitan revenue and expenditure tracking
  • Transparency and Open Data systems
  • Improvement of Metropolitan tax arrangement, etc.
