COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR TEENS

The “Communication Skills for Teens” session was conducted on 02nd November 2025 as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2025, organized by the undergraduates of ICST University Park in collaboration with ICTA Sri Lanka. The program aimed to equip teenagers with essential communication skills needed for academic success, social interaction, and personal development.

Students learned about the four main types of communication  verbal, non-verbal, written, and visual  and how each contributes to effective expression and understanding. They practiced active listening, which included maintaining eye contact, asking clarifying questions, avoiding interruptions, and summarizing what they heard. The session also trained teens to speak with confidence by controlling tone, using proper posture, and overcoming stage fear through regular practice. Nonverbal communication techniques such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language were emphasized for stronger overall communication.

A special focus was given to digital communication etiquette, teaching teens how to communicate responsibly online by avoiding misinformation, respecting others in comments and messages, protecting privacy, and responding appropriately to cyberbullying. Interactive activities such as pair talks and role plays — including “Market Talk” scenarios  helped students apply their skills in real-life situations, strengthening teamwork and leadership qualities.

The session had a highly positive impact, helping students become confident speakers, active listeners, and responsible communicators. They improved their interpersonal skills, emotional resilience, and social behavior, making them better prepared for classroom discussions, presentations, interviews, and everyday interactions. Overall, the session successfully empowered teens with the communication skills needed to navigate academic, social and digital environments effectively.
