Influencer Marketing

The Influencer Marketing session, held on 20 November 2025 as part of GEW 2025, helped students understand how digital influence shapes modern business, branding, and customer behavior. Organized by the undergraduates of ICST University Park in collaboration with ICTA Sri Lanka, the session introduced students to the rising power of social media personalities and how they impact purchasing decisions in today’s digital world.

The session began by defining who influencers are—individuals who create engaging content online and have the ability to guide opinions and trends among their followers. Students explored how influencers build trust, authenticity, and community, making them more effective than traditional advertisements. Examples from platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube helped students understand the real-world impact of influencer culture.

A key insight shared during the session was: “Influence is built on trust, not followers.” This helped students understand that authentic connections create stronger impact than large numbers. They also learned that the right influencer acts as “a bridge between brand and audience,” demonstrating how influencer partnerships help brands communicate their values more effectively.

Students explored how businesses collaborate with influencers using sponsored posts, brand partnerships, product reviews, and affiliate links. The facilitator emphasized choosing influencers who match the brand’s identity, message, and target audience—highlighting that strategic alignment creates stronger results and long-lasting brand relationships.

The session also discussed common challenges, including fake followers, misleading content, and online negativity. Students learned the importance of transparency, ethical communication, and maintaining credibility in the digital space. They realized that “trends fade, but relationships last,” motivating them to prioritize long-term influencer collaborations built on trust.

During interactive activities, students analyzed real influencer campaigns, compared engagement metrics, and brainstormed how small businesses can benefit from micro-influencers who have smaller but more active communities. They explored the entrepreneurial flow:
Brand → Story → Influencer → Audience → Engagement → Trust → Growth,
which showed how meaningful storytelling and digital influence drive brand success.

By the end of the session, students gained a strong understanding of how influencer marketing works and how it can be used to build brand awareness, trust, and business growth. They were inspired to use social media positively, build authentic personal brands, and explore digital entrepreneurship ethically and creatively.
