The online Marketplace Advantage

Your product + the digital world = unlimited opportunity!

The Online Marketplace Advantage session, held on 20 November 2025 as part of GEW 2025, introduced students to the powerful role digital platforms play in modern entrepreneurship. Organized by the undergraduates of ICST University Park in collaboration with ICTA Sri Lanka, the session helped students understand how online marketplaces create new opportunities for young entrepreneurs to start, grow, and scale their businesses efficiently.

The session began by explaining what an online marketplace is a digital space where buyers and sellers connect without needing a physical store. Students discovered that anyone, even beginners, can start selling products or services online using tools like social media pages, e-commerce platforms, and digital payment systems. They were inspired to learn that online selling requires low startup costs, offers flexibility, and provides access to a much wider customer base.

A key insight shared was: “The marketplace is your window to the world.” This helped students understand the global reach of online platforms and how digital ecosystems break geographical barriers. Another powerful reminder was: “Visibility is currency in the digital age,” emphasizing that building a strong online presence is essential for attracting customers and growing a business.

Students were guided through the essential steps of starting an online business: choosing a product, identifying the target audience, taking good product photos, writing clear descriptions, and setting competitive prices. Facilitators also stressed the importance of trust, communication, and excellent customer service in building a strong reputation.

During interactive activities, students explored popular online marketplaces, analyzed real product listings, and discussed strategies for pricing, customer reviews, and digital marketing. They learned that in a crowded digital space, “your story sets you apart,” making branding and storytelling crucial for standing out. Facilitators also highlighted that while algorithms change, “customer trust endures,” motivating students to focus on authenticity rather than trends.

The entrepreneurial journey was presented as:
Product → Marketplace → Visibility → Engagement → Trust → Growth → Sustainability,
demonstrating how simple ideas can grow into scalable businesses when combined with strategy and consistent effort.

By the end of the session, students felt confident and motivated to explore online marketplaces as powerful tools for digital entrepreneurship. They understood that while these platforms offer global reach, scalability, and insights, success requires dedication, adaptability, honesty, and creativity.
