Problem to Prototype sprint

See a problem? Build the solution!

The Problem to Prototype Sprint session, held on 14 November 2025 as part of GEW 2025, guided students through the complete journey of transforming real-life problems into meaningful prototype solutions. Organized by the undergraduates of ICST University Park in collaboration with ICTA Sri Lanka, the session aimed to strengthen students’ innovation skills by helping them recognize everyday challenges, think critically, and convert ideas into structured prototypes.

The session began by introducing students to a problem-solving mindset encouraging them to observe their surroundings, identify real problems, and understand root causes. Students learned that every successful innovation begins with a clear problem statement, and that meaningful solutions grow from focused thinking and careful observation.

Participants were then guided through the steps of a prototype sprint, including brainstorming ideas, sketching possible solutions, narrowing down concepts, and developing simple prototypes. They also learned rapid prototyping techniques and the importance of iteration and feedback. Facilitators emphasized that a prototype is not a final product but a stepping stone for improvement, highlighting the value of continuous refinement.

Collaboration played a key role throughout the session. Students discovered that diverse perspectives strengthen ideas and that open communication accelerates the innovation process. The facilitator encouraged teamwork and resilience, reminding students that setbacks are learning opportunities rather than failures.

By the end of the session, students demonstrated improved clarity in identifying problems, confidence in generating solutions, and enthusiasm for creating prototypes that could eventually grow into impactful products. The session successfully nurtured creativity, logical thinking, and an innovation-driven mindset in participants empowering them to see challenges as opportunities for real-world problem-solving.
