What is AI

AI is everywhere. Learn how it works!

The What is AI? session, held on 21 November 2025 as part of GEW 2025, introduced students to the fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence and its growing influence across industries. Organized by ICST University Park, the session aimed to simplify AI for beginners and help students understand how intelligent systems are transforming business, education, healthcare, and daily life.

The session began by explaining what artificial intelligence is and how it allows machines to mimic human thinking learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. Students explored key types of AI, including narrow AI, which performs specific tasks, and general AI, which aims to function like the human mind. They were shown real-world examples such as voice assistants, self-driving cars, and recommendation systems, helping them see how AI already supports everyday experiences.

Students also learned about the main components of AI, including machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. These technologies enable machines to recognize patterns, understand language, and interpret images. The session emphasized that data plays a central role in training AI systems, allowing them to improve accuracy and automate tasks over time.

A strong portion of the discussion focused on the ethical implications of AI. Students examined important issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, fairness, transparency, and the impact of automation on jobs. They were encouraged to think about the responsibility that comes with developing AI systems and the importance of designing technology that benefits everyone.

Interactive activities and practical examples helped make complex concepts easy to understand. Students discovered how AI tools are already transforming sectors like healthcare, finance, entertainment, and education. They also explored how AI supports innovation and how future careers in AI, machine learning, and data science offer exciting opportunities.

By the end of the session, students gained a clear understanding of what AI is, how it works, and why it is shaping the future. Many expressed interest in learning more about artificial intelligence and applying AI concepts in their own projects. The session empowered students to see AI not as a distant technology, but as a practical tool that they can use to solve problems, build solutions, and drive positive change.
