YELD Mentorship Program

The YELD Mentorship Program is a six-month flagship initiative designed to empower micro and small enterprises to scale up through tailored support. This comprehensive program combines one-on-one business-specific mentorship with training, coaching, and advisory services provided by seasoned mentors and advisors. Targeting self-employed youth entrepreneurs running startups aspiring to join the SME category, as well as ready-to-launch ventures at various stages of development, the program offers practical guidance throughout the entrepreneurial journey. Participants receive support in crucial areas such as identifying market opportunities, developing robust business models, and learning how to launch and pitch their ventures for funding. The program delves into critical aspects of business development, including customer-facing and operational elements of business modeling, venture launch strategies, and achieving product-market fit. Additionally, it provides valuable insights on leveraging unique talents and skills, and navigating the complexities of assembling an effective founding team.

The main program components of the YELD Mentorship Program are:

• Mentorship: The core of the program is customized business-specific mentorship, where mentees are matched with experienced volunteer mentors. Mentors are required to have at least five years of professional business experience, either as senior executives or accomplished entrepreneurs.
• Training and Coaching: The program provides entrepreneurial training and coaching to impart relevant business and leadership skills.
• Advisory Services: Experienced mentors and advisors offer technical business advisory services to help participants improve their business operations and profitability.
• Networking and Partnerships: YELD establishes linkages between mentors, mentees, industry stakeholders, and partners in youth entrepreneurship. This helps create a supportive ecosystem for young entrepreneurs.

Program Structure

• The program runs for six months, the most recent cohort is running from June 1st to November 30th, 2024.
• Mentees are required to draft annual, monthly, and weekly action plans.
• Regular communication between mentors and mentees is expected.
• The program is free to participate in, with the only cost being time commitment and discipline.

Additional features of the program are:

• Evaluation and Feedback: YELD fosters continuous improvement through data collection and analysis from program beneficiaries (mentees). This helps them make evidence-based decisions to enhance the program's effectiveness.
• Potential Funding Opportunities: During or after successful completion of the mentorship program, participants may have opportunities to receive seed grants or business funding through collaboration with YELD Kenya's strategic partners.

These components work together to provide a comprehensive support system for young entrepreneurs in Kenya, aiming to help them scale up their startups and SMEs through practical guidance, skill development, and networking opportunities.
