Global Entrepreneurship Week is one of the largest celebrations of entrepreneurship around the world. As the countdown continues to #GEW2018, hosts are announcing partners, cities that are celebrating GEW and activities they are working on for the week. This week’s global update includes news from four countries from four continents around the world.

Allan Connolly, the acting managing director of the Global Entrepreneurship Network country affiliate in Australia, was on Western Australia television (WTV) to talk about bringing GEN’s initiatives to the country and the opportunities now available to entrepreneurs and startups. Connolly told WTV about his efforts to open Startup Huddle chapters in the region.

“It is not very often that Western Australia gets the opportunity to be the first. Queensland now has not a chief scientist but a chief entrepreneur, Steve Baxter from shark tank and South Australia have just appointed a chief entrepreneur too, so it won't be long before the rest of the states see the value in that,” said Connolly.

With Global Entrepreneurship Week coming up November 12-18, GEW Australia makes a call to all entrepreneurs including those who are not involved in an incubator and accelerator to come out and tell their story.

The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, the offficial GEW host organization in Bermuda, announced on September 20 it will be accepting nominations for its 2nd Annual Small Business Awards, an event held in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week in November.

Ondreyah Rochester, BEDC’s Junior Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Officer said, “Members of the community are encouraged to cast their vote with their suggestions for the Island’s best small businesses – from now until the deadline, which has been extended to Monday, October 8, 2018, by emailing “Categories for the 2018 awards will include: Entrepreneur of the Year, New Business of the Year, Most Enterprising Young Entrepreneur, BEDC Client of the Year, and People’s Choice. We are thrilled to once again be able to recognise Bermuda’s talented and dedicated small business owners in this way."

According to Erica Smith, BEDC’s Executive Director, the Small Business Awards have proven to be a fantastic way to celebrate the accomplishments and great work carried out by small business owners around the Island. “For years, we had discussed the possibility of setting up an award ceremony with the goal of highlighting Bermuda’s small business owners and entrepreneurs.”

GEW in Finland gathers together students, community members and various interest groups in entrepreneurship each year. The week aims to increase the awareness on entrepreneurship and inspire new people to engage in entrepreneurial activity. Global Entrepreneurship Week Finland just announced two new main partners of the week this year: The Federation of Finnish Enterprises (Suomen Yrittäjät) and the national YES network, focusing on entrepreneurship education.

South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) is the coordinator of the celebrations in Finland.  This year’s activities include info sessions, lectures, workshops and speeches from inspiring speakers. For more information:

This year, the Mansa district in Zambia is taking part in Global Entrepreneurship Week for the first time. Luapula Chiefs’ Council has partnered with Elif Business Solutions, the official GEW host organization in Zambia, to run activities throughout the week and to host the 2018 Luapula Chiefs Gala Dinner at the end of the Global Entrepreneurship Week.

According to Chief Chisunka from Luapula Chiefs’ Council, this partnership is in line with the Chiefs’ Council’s innovative vision and it will provide an opportunity for many entrepreneurs in the province to showcase their visionary products and services.

This year’s Luapula Culture Gala Dinner will introduce Royal Excellence Awards to honor various stakeholders recognized for the positive contribution to the development of the province. During the gala dinner, the winners of the Global Entrepreneurship Week competition in the district will also be given awards to encourage innovation and inspire new entrepreneurs in the area.
