Global Entrepreneurship Week 2023: Empowering Youth in Dominica
In the spirit of fostering innovation, creativity, and business acumen, the Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT) took center stage during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2023. Themed "Entrepreneurs Thrive Here," the week-long celebration witnessed a flurry of activities aimed at empowering the youth of Dominica and promoting a culture of entrepreneurship. Let's delve into the highlights of the impactful week organized by DYBT.
Youth Vibes Kick-Off
On the eve of Global Entrepreneurship Week, DYBT's Project Officer, Mr. Eamon Gibbons, set the stage for the upcoming events by being featured as a guest on Youth Vibes. This provided a platform to showcase the Trust's initiatives, share success stories, and build anticipation for the week ahead.
Official Launch and Press Briefing
November 13th marked the official launch of GEW 2023, as DYBT hosted a Press Briefing at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Conference Room. Hon. Oscar George delivered a keynote address, formally inaugurating the week's festivities. The event also served as a window to the broader activities of DYBT, including the upcoming 31st Small Business Advancement Forum (SBAF) and the DYBT Caterers Showcase.
Digital Presence and School Tour
DYBT effectively leveraged social media by posting a reel that encapsulated remarks from key stakeholders, including the Minister and Minister of State for Youth, DYBT staff, and entrepreneurs.
The Trust extended its outreach by conducting a School Tour, visiting six educational institutions ranging from primary to tertiary levels. Grand Fond Primary, St. Luke’s Primary, Portsmouth Secondary, Wesley High School, St. Martin Secondary, and the Dominica State College were the chosen venues where DYBT engaged with students to instill an entrepreneurial spirit.
District-Level Collaboration
Collaboration was a key theme as DYBT partnered with the Youth Development Division Youth Officer for the East District, Mrs. Nikki Durand. Together, an Entrepreneurs Expo was organized in the Eastern District, attracting several participants who showcased a diverse range of products and services. High school students from Castle Bruce Secondary School actively participated in this enriching event.
Supporting Community Initiatives
DYBT extended its support to the Marigot Credit Union's Business Talk, where the Coordinator and Project Officer facilitated a session. This collaborative effort aimed to provide valuable insights and guidance to aspiring and existing entrepreneurs within the community.
Panel Discussion: Cultivating Entrepreneurial Spirit in Education
A thought-provoking panel discussion on "Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Spirit in Education" was a highlight of the week. The panel, featuring prominent figures like Mrs. Rhanda Alfred, Executive Director of Junior Achievement Dominica, Ms. Esther Robinson, Principal of Pioneer Preparatory School, and the dynamic mother-daughter duo Ms. Relda Andre and Akeelah Andre, was broadcasted live on Facebook, reaching a wider audience.
19th Graduation and Award Ceremony
Culminating the week's festivities, DYBT hosted its 19th Graduation and Award Ceremony on November 22nd, 2023, at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Forecourt. A total of 57 individuals received certificates across four programs. Notable entrepreneurs, including Mr. Nathaniel Lovell of Bee Api and Mrs. Althia Joy Watty of Joyful Designs Plus, were recognized as the Determined Male and Female Entrepreneurs of 2023, respectively.
