Panel discussion with stakeholders

Panel Discussion with Stakeholders: The panel discussion highlighted the major challenges and opportunities within Ethiopia’s entrepreneurial landscape. Stakeholders noted that entrepreneurs continue to face significant constraints, including limited access to finance, high interest rates, an underdeveloped venture capital ecosystem, rigid government regulations, and impractical policies. Additional barriers such as restricted market access, heavy dependence on imports, limited business and managerial skills, weak support networks, and macroeconomic instability further hinder entrepreneurial growth. Socio-cultural factors, including fear of failure and a preference for formal employment, also discourage many from pursuing entrepreneurship. Despite these challenges, Ethiopia offers substantial opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, textiles, ICT, and manufacturing. Young entrepreneurs, in particular, can explore emerging areas such as agribusiness, eco-friendly textile production, software development, fintech solutions, and small scale manufacturing. The discussion underscored the need for stronger national support systems, including expanded entrepreneurship training programs (such as PEEB for civil servants), enhanced collaboration among stakeholders, deeper engagement of sector experts, the establishment of innovation hubs within universities, and the scaling up of entrepreneurship education for teachers and youth. These strategic efforts can help unlock Ethiopia’s entrepreneurial potential and drive sustainable economic development.
