Program Impact: Taipei
Situation
The Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) gained momentum in the early 2010s - signifying new opportunities for innovators and founders and their economies. With its strong technology ecosystem, electronics manufacturing sector and engineering talent, Taipei played a notable role in the development of these sectors.
The Small and Medium Enterprise Administration (SMEA) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs included the development of these industries and adoption of them by new and small companies among its priorities. The government agency sought opportunities to strengthen its startups, IoT ecosystem, pan-ASEAN collaboration, innovation-related policies and cross-border partnerships.
Approach
After witnessing the success of past Global Entrepreneurship Congress and related GEC+ events, SMEA submitted a bid to host GEC+ in Taipei in 2018. In collaboration with the Global Entrepreneurship Network, SMEA developed a program themed on enabling social impact with AI + IoT. Sessions focused on the use of smart technology applications to accelerate the innovation and digital transformation of startups and SMEs, as well as promoting the sustainable development of the global digital economic ecosystem.
GEC+Taipei received strong support from the Cabinet's Board of Science and Technology (BOST) to explore business partnerships and collaboration opportunities in Asia, especially among ASEAN countries. As a result, GEC+ was a joint effort between governmental agencies including the MOEA, local startup incubation centers, industry leaders, academics and the R+D centers of leading universities.
Impact
More than 400 government, industrial, academic, and entrepreneur delegates from across Asia and the world witnessed Taiwan’s leadership. Held during the Taiwan Innotech Expo, the largest technology tradeshow in Asia, delegates shared observations on future opportunities, policy case studies and ideas, and success factors for startups in the IoT realm.
As Dr. Ming-Ji Wu, Director General of SMEA, MOEA noted in a press conference, GEC+ Taipei was a critical platform connecting Taiwan’s startup communities with the world. GEN leaders of Asia-Pacific countries discussed opportunities to collaborate and strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem. The managing directors of six GEN member countries signed a “gAsia Pass” cooperation framework, a resource-sharing initiative for APAC entrepreneurs that has contributed to similar initiatives in other countries including the "Bridge Dubai" initiative supporting entrepreneurs in the UAE and India.
Meanwhile, Taipei’s local entrepreneurship ecosystem was on full display. Founders participated in an international startup pitch competition and connected with new business partners, venture capitalists, and cross-border expansion opportunities. Delegates also visited Taipei's flagship entrepreneurial cluster, Startup Terrace, which attracts international talent by providing a one-stop service for visa and express customs clearance, as well as tax reductions.
