Local Economic Development (LED) as a Driver of Trade in the Commonwealth

Commonwealth Local Government Forum

Building on the success of its recent series of events on Sustainable Urbanisation: A Call to Action: across the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) is convening a webinar on Local Economic Development (LED) as a Driver of Trade in the Commonwealth.

CLGF has recently produced a paper on “Local Economic Development as a Driver of Trade in the Commonwealth” which builds on its substantive work on local economic development (LED) in member countries, including in Africa, South Asia and the Caribbean. This paper provides background for the webinar discussion, which will bring together members and partners from across the Commonwealth in Asia to discuss trends and future prospects. The session will address some key questions and will inform CLGF’s future work with members, including work on sustainable urbanisation. Specifically:

  • How can governments, both central and state/provincial, better foster the strategic linkages between LED and international trade?
  • What mechanisms are needed to ensure greater inclusion of local governments and stakeholders in national trade/development strategy?
  • What can LGAs do to support local businesses to be better integrated into national and international value chains?
  • How can we ensure LED plays a central role in post-COVID-19 economic reconstruction?

This is the second in a series of regional discussions that will culminate in a CLGF-Commonwealth Secretariat dialogue planned for late 2020.
