VOCATIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Vocational Training for Youngsters (Secondary School Students)
 
The phrase “catch them young” can aptly describe the atmosphere at Obudu hall, venue of the Vocational Training organized by CBN SS EDC for Secondary School students in Calabar metropolis. The vocational training was put together to celebrate the 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Week and to inculcate entrepreneurial lifestyle in the Secondary School Students through experiential and practical skills learning that can be commercialized. On hand to welcome the students was Ms Sarah Oyam, who thanked them for coming and explained the idea behind global entrepreneurship week and the essence of organizing a vocational training for them. The students totaling about 42 in number, came from four different secondary schools in Calabar and were paired in five groups for the training. Five different teams from Radiant Brides, Sugar n Spice, Ankara Bag House and others were on hand to teach the students how to make confectionaries (Cakes), Facial Makeup, Ankara shoe/bags, Shoe making and Hat making. The students could not hide their joy as this was a total and different new learning experience for them. A student from Nico Secondary School, Calabar, Master Ayiukorebi Asuquo was thrilled by the facial make up class and had the opportunity to make up a female student from another school which turned out to be the best makeup of the day. “Am going to start doing facial makeup for my mums and my siblings as from today. I never knew I could be this creative with makeup until today. I will definitely explore this more” said Asuquo. “I want to become a creative fashion designer and an ambassador” said Favour Michael Eni after going through the Ankara bag/shoe and facial make up training. Favour who is an SS2 student from Big Qua Girls Secondary School can now comfortably sketch designs on paper, and her next plan is to save enough money to enable her source for Ankara materials to start sewing small designs. Other highlights from the training was the presentation of different designs made by each of the five groups which included Ankara bags, cake, hat, and a well-made up student face. One of the secondary school teachers, Mr. Okoroafor Michael, on behalf of others, thanked SS EDC for putting together the training, as it afforded the students an opportunity to learn differently from what they are used to before and encouraged all the students present to put to use, all the skills and knowledge gained from the training.
