About GEN in India

GEN began operating in India in 2008 when it partnered with Bharatiya Yuva Shakti Trust (BYST) to conduct the inaugural national Global Entrepreneurship Week campaign. In 2010, Prince Charles of the United Kingdom opened Global Entrepreneurship Week in India at the Ecopreneurs Conference in Chandigarh that BYST organized.

In 2017, the governments of India and the United States appointed GEN as the lead private-sector partner in support of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. The Summit took place in Hyderabad and featured 1,500 entrepreneurs and investors from the U.S., India and all other parts of the world. GEN coordinated the participation of entrepreneurs and the integration of private sector partners in the program. Ivanka Trump led the U.S. delegation and spoke about U.S. efforts to support women entrepreneurs and foster global economic growth. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, highlighted India’s enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Following the Summit, GEN launched a countrywide series of stakeholder panels in partnership with T-Hub, India’s largest incubator for startups, to assess current conditions, explore innovative new approaches, and develop priorities for stimulating new firm formation and growth. As a result of these discussions, GEN launched a series of programs and initiatives in support of India’s entrepreneurs. With support from the government, GEN developed a Women Entrepreneurship Platform in 2018 in partnership with the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), a think tank. The enabling platform consisted of three pillars: Iccha Shakti, Gyaan Shakti and Karma Shakti and provided services including acceleration, incubation, mentorship, credit counseling, corporate partnerships, and connections to investment firms.

Highway to 100 Unicorns Program

With support from Microsoft, GEN launched the Highway to a 100 Unicorns Program in 2019 in six locations: Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Telangana. GEN selected 56 startups to participate with four receiving funding as a direct result. To implement the program, GEN served as intermediary between Microsoft and the local government agency responsible for strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in each location and provided in-depth analysis to Microsoft. With these resources, GEN and Microsoft developed an extensive outreach plan to identify the top startups in each place in the fields of AI, e-commerce, ed-tech, fin-tech, and health-tech.

Project Amplify

In 2020, GEN launched Project Amplify in partnership with Accenture and Microsoft. The program provided 47 Indian startups with access to Accenture’s and Microsoft’s latest technologies, in-house seminars, expert guidance and business development mentoring. These helped participating startups to test and validate proofs-of-concept to re-envision and expand their market reach. GEN provided program management and led the planning, execution, and engagement with startups. As part of program implementation, GEN organized founder interviews and webinars for the cohort as part of program engagement.

Since GEN began operating in India in 2008, it has nurtured deep connections throughout the country and partnered with various national programs to strengthen the startup ecosystem. GEN’s impact in India: 50+ Partners, 1500+ Startups, 15+ Government Agencies, 10+ States in India.
