About GEN in Morocco

Morocco's engagement with the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) became more prominent in 2014 when, with GEN's support, the White House and Government of Morocco hosted the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) in Marrakech. This high-profile event, timed to happen during Global Entrepreneurship Week, featured international leaders including U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden and GEN President Jonathan Ortmans and positioned Morocco as a key gateway for entrepreneurship in Africa and the MENA region.

From 2015 onward, Morocco has maintained consistent participation in GEN activities. Startup Maroc emerged as the primary national partner and GEW host organization, providing stable leadership for national entrepreneurship campaigns across multiple years.

Moroccan startups have achieved growing visibility on GEN's global stage. Societall, founded by Aberki Ismail, is part of GEN Starters Club — a community of talented founders leading promising startups with access to training, support, and a massive network of experienced entrepreneurs and mentors to help them scale. More notably, Agmetrix, an agri-tech and space startup specializing in AI and geospatial solutions for climate-smart agriculture (founded by Abdelkrim Bouasria), was recognized as an Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC) finalist in 2022.

Key leadership has strengthened Morocco's position in the network. Naoufal Chama, Acting Managing Director of GEN Morocco and founder of Startup Maroc, has been a central figure. Additional active contributors include Dr. Lamyaa El Bassiti of Startup Universe Morocco, who organized the launch of GEN's Startup Huddle Casablanca chapter in October 2025. Abdelhaq Mellakh and Swethal Kumar, who have helped drive Moroccan participation in the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC).

Through hosting a landmark Global Entrepreneurship Summit in 2014, sustained GEW leadership via Startup Maroc, recognition of innovative startups like Agmetrix in global competitions, and the recent expansion of community programs such as Startup Huddle, GEN's work in Morocco has evolved from high-visibility international hosting to deeper, multi-layered ecosystem development, in collaboration with early partners such as CEED Morocco. The ongoing mission is to strengthen Morocco's entrepreneurial infrastructure, connect local founders to global opportunities, and support the country's ambition to become a dynamic innovation hub in Africa and the MENA region.
