Managing the Balance Sheet
GEN Philippines held a webinar on May 25, 2023 entitled "Managing the Balance Sheet". The webinar was attended by 200 participants and was delivered by Mr. Jesse Rey L. Meneses, a professional lecturer of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a certified internal controls auditor and certified forensic accountant.
Meneses started the webinar by explaining the importance of the balance sheet. He said that the balance sheet is a financial statement that reports a company's assets, liabilities, and equity at a specific point in time. The balance sheet is a snapshot of a company's financial health, and it is used by investors, creditors, and other stakeholders to assess a company's financial strength.
Meneses then discussed the following key components of the balance sheet:
- Assets: Assets are things of value that a company owns. Assets can be classified as current assets, which are expected to be converted into cash within one year, or non-current assets, which are expected to be converted into cash over a longer period of time.
- Liabilities: Liabilities are debts that a company owes to others. Liabilities can be classified as current liabilities, which are due within one year, or non-current liabilities, which are due over a longer period of time.
- Equity: Equity is the difference between a company's assets and liabilities. Equity represents the ownership interest of the company's shareholders.
Meneses then discussed the following key steps in managing the balance sheet:
- Identify your goals: The first step is to identify your goals for the balance sheet. Do you want to increase your assets? Reduce your liabilities? Improve your equity?
- Analyze your current balance sheet: Once you know your goals, you need to analyze your current balance sheet to identify any areas that need improvement.
- Develop a plan to improve your balance sheet: Once you have identified areas for improvement, you need to develop a plan to address those areas.
- Implement your plan and monitor your progress:** Once you have developed a plan, you need to implement it and monitor your progress. This will help you to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals.
Meneses concluded the webinar by saying that managing the balance sheet is an important part of financial management. He encouraged the participants to develop a plan to manage their balance sheet and to monitor their progress on a regular basis.
The webinar was well-received by the participants, who said that they learned a lot about managing the balance sheet. They also appreciated Meneses' wealth of knowledge and experience, and his practical advice.
