Igniting Innovation

This report presents the case for supporting deep tech chemistry SMEs in the UK. The study highlights the unique contributions of these innovative companies and reveals the challenges they face in transforming research and development into real-world applications. It emphasizes that deep tech chemistry SMEs are crucial for addressing pressing global challenges and contributing to the UK's innovation missions. The report outlines key barriers these companies encounter, including access to finance, availability of specialized facilities, innovation leadership skills, and ecosystem support. Based on these findings, the Royal Society of Chemistry proposes a five-point action plan to champion the role of deep tech chemistry SMEs, establish peer networks, improve access to capital, tailor funding processes, and facilitate access to necessary premises and equipment. This evidence-based report aims to inform policymakers and key players in the innovation ecosystem about the importance of supporting these companies to maximize their potential in tackling societal and environmental challenges
