Power in Perseverance: Understanding the Journey of Women Entrepreneurs in Yemen

Using in-depth interviews and photo documentaries, this study analyzes factors that enable or constrain women's participation in economic activities during this challenging period. The report reveals a complex web of intertwined factors acting as both facilitators and barriers at individual, household, enterprise, market, and institutional levels. It highlights how conflict and gender norms have significantly shaped these women's entrepreneurial journeys, with many starting businesses to cope with economic instability. Despite low female labor force participation in Yemen, the study uncovers critical insights into the needs and aspirations of women entrepreneurs, aiming to inform the creation of an enabling environment. The findings are relevant not only to the specific group studied but also to women in other parts of Yemen, those in similar conflict-affected contexts, and future generations of women entrepreneur.
