Three years ago, the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Bogotá, Colombia, echoed with a demand for stronger community, robust education, and comprehensive hands-on support. To address this, the first Colombian chapter of Startup Huddle was launched in Bogotá in 2019. The seeds sown by me have since flourished into a vibrant hub that has served a diverse range of founders, from early-stage startups to mature businesses ready for expansion.
As the Bogotá chapter thrived, we identified another region ripe for entrepreneurial growth - Barranquilla. In 2022, Ricardo Enrique Peña Ruiz embraced the challenge of founding the second Startup Huddle chapter in Colombia, extending our vision to a broader landscape.
This expansion would not have been possible without the pivotal role played by Steven A. Rodríguez, a staunch supporter and advocate of the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN). He championed the cause of GEN both locally and nationally, thereby opening avenues for the birth of Startup Huddle chapters in Colombia.
As we embrace a new chapter of Startup Huddle in Barranquilla, we carry forward the learnings and triumphs from Bogotá, fortified with the belief that we are shaping the future of entrepreneurship in Colombia. This year, we're excited to bring our community to the international stage at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, where we will participate in the Startup Huddle Organizers Meetup and the Global Startup Huddle Demo. This event is an amazing opportunity for our entrepreneurs to connect, learn, and grow alongside other innovative minds from across the globe.
The Mission of Startup Huddle
Startup Huddle, a program powered by GEN, is designed to empower entrepreneurs one at a time, while simultaneously bolstering the local ecosystem. The formula is simple yet effective: at a fixed meeting spot, one or two early-stage startup founders present their companies to an eclectic local audience. Each presentation is succeeded by a 20-minute Q&A session where community members offer solutions, connections, and feedback. This monthly meetup fosters a vibrant entrepreneurial community, empowering each entrepreneur one at a time.
The Fruits of Our Huddle
The growth we've witnessed in the past three years has been both inspiring and humbling. Our community members have created an authentic and nurturing environment, where vulnerability is honored and luck is self-made. The outcomes of Startup Huddle extend beyond the mere growth of startups. Our platform helps foster authentic relationships, amplifies local stories to a global audience, plugs into a vast entrepreneurial network, and leverages a plethora of resources from GEN's network. It also offers a rich platform for personal growth and skill development, particularly in community organization and personal branding.
Our Startup Huddle Family
Our reach extends to a wide array of individuals: from aspiring entrepreneurs to experienced ones, from policymakers to investors, mentors, and other supporters. They all play an integral role in our ecosystem:

Looking Ahead
As we look forward, we draw inspiration from the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2023 (GSER 2023), an in-depth analysis that sheds light on the world's leading startup ecosystems, emerging trends, and pressing challenges faced by entrepreneurs. Notably, Bogotá has ascended to the 61-70 range in the Emerging Ecosystem ranking. This impressive leap is, in part, due to a 37% increase in Ecosystem Value, driven by prominent tech companies such as Rappi, with a valuation of $5.25 billion, and the Proptech platform Habi, which emerged as a unicorn in 2022.
This upward movement signifies the robust growth of our ecosystem, signaling an era of immense potential and opportunity. It's heartening to see Bogotá, the birthplace of our first Startup Huddle chapter, making strides on the global startup stage. This reaffirms our belief that Colombia is fertile ground for entrepreneurial growth and innovation.
As we usher in a new era of Startup Huddle in Barranquilla, we are filled with anticipation and hope. The problems we aim to solve stretch from gaps in the entrepreneurial ecosystem to a lack of community and rigorous education for startups.
