Enterprise Go

Our Event

All 4,500 full time learners at Kirklees College, will be taking part in 15 hours’ worth of Global Entrepreneurship Week activities.

Whilst promoting our activities, we will be using the twitter hastag #GEWUK16, #EnterpiseGO and tagging in @kirkleescollege. So join in our online conversation.

The Framework

This year we have a selection of activities for staff to choose for learners to participate in.

The activities are stand-alone (for the most part), so there should not be as much complication in consecutive delivery.

Learners are required to participate in a minimum of 3 activities including the tasks on the VLE to prove skills development.

All the activities are based upon the Enterprise Skills wheel.  These are the skills and attributes individuals need to have to be a successful entrepreneur.

1.The Live Escape #Problem Solving

An external provider from the Live Escape http://www.theliveescape.co.uk/

is coming into the Waterfront Centre 14th, 15th, 16th and Dewsbury Centre 17th and 18th.

It is a live adventure game and learners will be shown into a room where they have 30minutes to solve a number of puzzles, mysteries and find hidden clues in order to crack the case

There are 2 rooms running next door to each other, which can accommodate approx. 10 learners each.  Therefore, if you have a large class you can take them all at the same time and split them between the 2 rooms. 10 is recommended – to ensure full engagement from all learners in the session, but where there are slightly more or less, it doesn’t matter.

Staff from the Live Escape will be on hand to support – but it is expected that staff timetabled to that slot with that group would also be on hand.

There will be a leader board outside the room and there will be a prize at the end of the week for the group that complete the puzzle the fastest. (A free trip to the actual Live Escape Game).

Please note that this activity has been written specifically for us, for this event. So it not the prison scenario described on the website.

After the event there is a brief document on the VLE that learners need to read and then complete a self-marking quiz. This reflection will fully complete the activity.

Staff need to book on to these sessions using Eventbrite which will be circulated shortly.

2.Art and Craft Factory Live Brief #Creativity and Innovation

Learners will attempt to solve a live brief set by the Art and Crafts Factory, a Huddersfield firm.

The materials will be available on the VLE and staff can use the PowerPoint to explain in lesson to the learners what they need to do.

It is a simple challenge based around pipe-cleaners and product diversification. What other uses can students think of for them?

Answers will then be uploaded to the VLE.  To show that learners have completed the task.

3.RNLI #Decision Making

The RNLI are coming in and there are 2 tasks that learners can be involved in.

  1. Respect the Water talk http://rnli.org/safety/respect-the-water/Pages/Respect-the-Water-resources.aspx

You are invited to bring your learners to the RNLI ‘Respect the Water Talk’, it is an interactive presentation around the dangers of water, so given the number of canals, reservoirs and lakes in our areas it has relevance for all. The session is focussed on personal decision making, with emphasis on the process and taking personal responsibility.

The talk is running every morning in the Connexions suite at the Waterfront Centre and lasts for approx. 1 hour. Each talk can accommodate up to 100 learners. Please book in via Eventbrite.

There are some questions on the VLE for learners to attempt to complete the task. It is a self-marking quiz.

  1. Leadership and Teamwork Activity

There is also the opportunity for your learners to attempt the Leadership and Teamwork session in the afternoon. This is particularly good, if you have a unit relating to this in your qualification specification. This will run every afternoon in the Connexions suite, it lasts approx. 3 hours and can hold up to 36 learners – which gives us the opportunity for cross-curricular learning.  As ever, you will be requested to book in on Eventbrite and accompany your learners.

It is a fully interactive session where learners play the part of a lifeboat crew and the decisions that they make affect the success of their rescue mission.

Please note, that learners have to have completed the Respect The Water session outlined above to be able to do the Leadership and Teamwork task. So the evidence on the VLE is the same quiz as Respect The Water.

4.CIPS Negotiation Challenge #Negotiation

This is a classroom based activity with a lesson plan and a PowerPoint for use. It takes approximately 2 hours, depending on the level of ability of the learners. The staff member talks through the theory of negotiation and conducts the practice activity.

After this is complete, the learners are given a number of scenario’s where negotiation needs to be used, and a number of actions that could be taken. In small groups, the learners decide for each scenario, which action should be taken in order of preference.

This can then be scored – using the materials provided, as the Chartered Institute of Procurement believes that there is a correct order of response.

There is a self-marking quiz on the VLE for learners to complete, after taking part in the activity to demonstrate the learning that has taken place.

5.Zin Obelisk  #team working

This is a classroom based activity that requires the facilitator to read through the instructions and to print and cut out the cards on the VLE. Duration is approximately 1 ½ hours.

"The Obelisk of Zin" is a classic training team exercise that works particularly well for large teams. Using a set of information cards that they cannot show to their colleagues, the team has to work out when a statue called the Obelisk of Zin was completed. The game can only be solved when everyone in the team participates and so has valuable learning points for the role of individuals in teams. There are strong links to maths and English in this task.

The 3 aims of "The Obelisk of Zin" are:

  • To practise working together in large teams to solve a problem
  • To underline the responsibility everyone has for team success
  • To manage varied information in a team.

Learners are to follow this up by answering the questions on the VLE.

6.Start Up Seminar #knowledge

Departments to arrange guest speaker – relevant to the curriculum area. This should be organised by HoDs/CTLs but can be facilitated in any teaching session or PAD.  This should probably take approximately an hour, depending on the Q&A.

The entrepreneur will talk through barriers to starting up in that industry and how they overcame them.

There is a briefing sheet that has been distributed to HoDs/CTLS, that they can send to speakers

There is a worksheet for learners to complete on the VLE.

7.Start Up Britain #planning and pitching

The Nat West Start Up Britain bus will be arriving at the Waterfront Centre on 17th Nov and the Wheelwright Centre on 18th November.

This session is particularly useful for any learner who is seriously interested in starting up their own business.  There is a pre session activity – that takes approx. 1 hour to complete, to prepare learners in small groups to start thinking about a business idea. The materials for this are available on the VLE. This is then uploaded as evidence.

There are then 3 sessions each day (all lasting 2 hours), holding 40 learners at a time – 20  on the top deck and 20 learners on the bottom deck, where banking experts deliver an interactive session and help learners to understand all about start-ups and how to do it.  These sessions are bookable on the VLE.

Practical support:

Our activities are very practical and hands on, therefore it is imperative that we offer practical guidance and support throughout. Therefore, learners across our 8 different sites will be supported by business people and industry specific speakers relating to their specific challenge.

Additionally our fabulous LRC team are offering further support:

• As there is a big Project Management theme around this week, there was a big promotion of this theme in the weeks leading up to the event, including displays and guides to useful websites etc.

•A qualified patent administrator is giving regular a brief talks on patents, trademarks and copyright for business.

•In the libraries, netbooks and tablets have be set up as part of it with a dedicated enterprise feed on it to promote e-resources, sites, books which might not be physically on a stand etc.

At Kirklees College, Global Entrepreneurship Week is all about providing practical assistance that makes it easier for people to start or grow their business, so that means offering mentoring and training but also we are also offering use of college facilities and equipment.

Mentoring:

Our activities are very practical and hands on, therefore it is imperative that we offer practical guidance and support throughout. Therefore, learners across our 8 different sites will be supported by business people, mentors from both inside and outside the college and industry specific speakers relating to their specific challenge.

Women's entrepreneurship:

At Kirklees College we are committed to equality and diversity and therefore encourage all our learners, whatever age, background, race, religion or sex they are.

Our briefs have been devised with equality and diversity in mind.

The video activities have been created using role models from a cross section, including prominent women.

Social Enterprise:

A number of the briefs have a social enterprise flavour including raising money for charity and supporting our local community through a variety of ways e.g. an in-house community project working with Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice

Measuring the impact of GEW:

All learners have participated in a questionnaire released prior to GEW Week to measure their knowledge and understanding of Enterprise. This is followed up with a further survey, which measures the distance travelled and how they felt the event went. All learners will further be encouraged to take part in the official GEW survey.
