Global Entrepreneurship Week: GM IoT Schools and Colleges Activity
Theme: Tech for Good – Social Entrepreneurship with Impact
Hosted by Salford Business School in collaboration with the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology
Overview
This Global Entrepreneurship Week, Salford Business School and the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology invite schools and colleges across Greater Manchester to explore how technology can drive social change. Under the theme Tech for Good: Social Entrepreneurship with Impact, students will discover how digital innovation and creativity can transform communities and open new pathways for future careers.
Why It Matters
Generation Z seek purpose, flexibility and autonomy in their work. This activity helps students see how their digital and technical skills can shape a better world. By combining global insights with local examples, participants will explore how technology can solve real social challenges while inspiring entrepreneurial thinking.
The Experience
Pre-Activity: Exploring Tech for Good
Students begin with an introduction to how technology supports social enterprise through:
A global example from Link Strategic Partners, showing how digital tools empower communities worldwide.
A local example from a Greater Manchester-based enterprise using technology to create positive social impact.
Students then reflect on:
How could technology be used to solve a social or community challenge you care about?
They also submit one tech-focused question for the live Fireside Chat.
The Fireside Chat: Global Meets Local
A live or recorded conversation hosted by Salford Business School brings together two inspiring speakers:
Global Perspective: Matt from Link Strategic Partners explains how digital communication and technology amplify community voices and drive inclusive impact.
Local Perspective: A Greater Manchester entrepreneur shares how they use innovation to address local needs through technology.
Students compare both approaches and take part in a live Q&A session that connects global ideas to local realities.
Follow-Up Challenge: Design for Impact
Students then take part in the Tech for Good Design Challenge where they create a simple concept for a tech-enabled social enterprise that could start locally and grow globally.
