Adam Engle

My career hasn’t followed a straight line – and that’s been my greatest strength. I’ve moved through financial services, consulting, healthcare management, executive search, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector, drawn each time toward missions rooted in equity, access, and community impact.

Early on, I learned that I’m energized by solving complex problems and building systems that help people thrive. That led me to manage $50M in healthcare operations, where I saw firsthand how operational decisions can either widen or narrow gaps in access. I carried that lesson with me as I shifted into philanthropy and community development.

Over the past four years, as Director of the Fund for Equitable Business Growth at The Chicago Community Trust, I led a multi-funder collaborative aimed at expanding access to resources and support for Black and Latine entrepreneurs. By organizing a network of over 40 business service organizations, I helped build a thriving ecosystem that distributed more than $14 million in grants and supported over 5,000 small businesses. My work has been centered on helping people and institutions grow in ways that strengthen the communities around them. I built a framework that empowers residents in Chicago’s most under-resourced neighborhoods to use entrepreneurship as a path to increased income and long-term wealth. By partnering with philanthropic funders and community-based organizations, we helped launch businesses that not only serve local needs but now employ neighbors and keep resources circulating locally.

Along the way, I’ve learned that real change happens when you invest in people – coaching leaders, supporting boards, and helping teams build the capacity to innovate and deliver meaningful results.

What ties my journey together is a simple belief: communities already hold the potential to transform their own futures. My work is to help unlock it.
