Ciera Whitaker has overcome numerous barriers to become a beacon of hope for young Black women in urban environments. Born and raised in the Englewood community on Chicago’s South Side, she grew up amidst poverty, violence, and discouragement. Despite facing family trauma, emotional devastation, and educational oppression throughout her childhood, Ciera was determined to change the trajectory of her life, her family's, and those who look like her. She chose education as her pathway to success, navigating through the Chicago Public School system with resilience and determination.
Ciera’s unwavering commitment to her goals led her to attain two Master’s Degrees—one in Business Administration/Entrepreneurship and the other in Science in Criminal Justice. She also holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Church Leadership. Balancing her academic pursuits with raising her two children, aged 14 and 16, Ciera has leveraged her educational, personal, and professional experiences to foster opportunities for urban communities to thrive.
For the past 15 years, Ciera has been at the forefront of designing and implementing small business and economic development initiatives for the South Shore Chamber of Commerce Community Development Corporation (CDC). The CDC's mission is to provide small businesses with professional development assistance that leads to increased revenue and stabilization, ultimately improving the quality of life for individuals and communities.
Ciera's remarkable achievements have been recognized with a Lifetime Presidential Achievement Award in 2023, a testament to her enduring impact and dedication to community development. Her dedication, tenacity, and diligence serve as a catalyst for making her dreams—and those of others—a reality.

Ciera’s exemplifies the power of faith and the pursuit of happiness. Her extraordinary work thus far is just the beginning, as she plans to become an even larger change agent for those who look like her.
