Professor Erkko Autio is Chair in Technology Venturing at Imperial College Business School. Previously, he was professor at Aalto University; HEC Lausanne; and Visiting Professor at CERN. He helped found the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor GEM (www.gemconsortium.org) and served in the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association. He co-authors the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index GEDI (www.thegedi.org) that profiles entrepreneurial ecosystems. His research focuses on high-growth entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial ecosystems, new venture internationalisation, technology-based venturing, business model innovation, and innovation ecosystems. He has been cited in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Fortune, MSNBC, and in some 400-500 news media globally. His research has generated over 21 000 citations in Google Scholar. He has been a founder, non-executive director and advisory board member of a number of companies from consultancy to technology-based ventures and venture funds, and he has worked widely with industry and government in Europe, Asia and South America. He has advised the EU Commission on high-growth entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystem policy, and he chaired the Europe Innova Expert Panel on ‘Gazelle’ Policy. While at Aalto University, he was closely involved in launching and developing the Otaniemi Science Park – Innopoli complex. New ventures started by his students have created several billions of Euro in new market capitalisation, and many have been listed in Europe’s ‘100 Hottest Technology Ventures’ list. He was recently recognised as one of the top 50 most impactful management scholars globally (graduation 1995 or later; Aguinis et al, 2012).
