Erik Stam

Erik Stam is Full Professor of Strategy, Organization & Entrepreneurship and Academic Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Utrecht University. At Utrecht University he is also member of the program team of the Strategic Research Theme Institutions for Open Societies, and member of the advisory boards of the Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS) and the Centre for Global Challenges (UGlobe). He is Extraordinary Professor of Economics at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and Scientific Director of the Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship.

He was Dean of the Utrecht University School of Economics, and held positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Max Planck Institute of Economics (Jena, Germany), Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China), Indiana University (Bloomington, US), IMT School for Advanced Studies (Lucca, Italy), and the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR). He is editor of the journals Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Small Business Economics.

He is a leading scholar of entrepreneurial ecosystems, engaged in the science and practice of entrepreneurship-led development, both locally and globally. He has (co-)authored more than hundred books, book chapters, and articles on this and related topics. Next to his scientific work he is often consulted by governments, at the local, regional, national, and international level (European Commission, OECD, G20, World Bank, WIPO), and by start-ups, investors and corporates on innovation and entrepreneurship.
