Entrepreneurship & SME Development Expert | Ecosystem Builder | Program Strategist
Herman Nyamunga is an internationally recognized expert in entrepreneurship and SME development with more than 15 years of experience designing, funding, and scaling programs that empower small and mid-sized enterprises across the United States, Africa, and Latin America. His work focuses on inclusive economic growth, innovation-driven entrepreneurship, and building strong business ecosystems that connect small enterprises to global markets, expertise that closely aligns with the challenges and opportunities facing Kenya’s SME sector today.
As the Associate Director for Inclusive Entrepreneurship and Economic Equity at Prosperity Now, Herman leads national initiatives that advance sustainable business practices and inclusive growth. He spearheaded the Green Business Accelerator, a multi-city initiative that trained over 75 entrepreneurship support professionals and guided more than 30 enterprises in renewable energy and sustainable operations. His work strengthens collaboration among CDFIs, development agencies, and chambers of commerce to expand access to capital, technology, and energy efficiency resources for small businesses.
Previously, as Technical Advisor for Economic Empowerment and Small Business Development at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Herman provided strategic leadership for microenterprise programs across six U.S. states and offered technical assistance to IRC initiatives in Europe. He advised 26 partner organizations under the SBA Community Navigators program, enhancing outreach, performance tracking, and service delivery to thousands of entrepreneurs. His efforts helped local business ecosystems adopt evidence-based practices for sustainability and inclusive growth.
At the Community College of Philadelphia, Herman directs the PowerUp Program, which has supported over 3,500 small businesses with training, technical assistance, and access to funding. Earlier, as Director of the Global Enterprise Hub at The Welcoming Center, he transformed a local business program into an internationally recognized innovation hub—earning a Global Softlanding Designation from the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA) and attracting funding from the Knight, Kellogg, and Kauffman Foundations, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Herman holds an MBA from Eastern University (USA) and a bachelor’s degree in education from Kenyatta University (Kenya). He serves on the board of the International Business Innovation Association.
