Philemon Hatangimana

Philemon Hatangimana is an innovative agricultural entrepreneur and the founder of Philemon Farm Africa Enterprise, a pioneering venture in Rwanda’s agriculture sector, Philemon has dedicated his career to transforming agricultural practices through sustainable solutions.

Philemon’s journey began with a modest investment of $35 during his university studies, where he started cultivating mushrooms using agricultural waste and grasses. His innovative approach quickly paid off, leading to significant financial returns and the expansion of his project. Philemon Farm started in 2014 but officially In 2021, Philemon formally and legally established Philemon Farm Africa Enterprise, which focuses on creating a comprehensive mushroom value chain. The enterprise not only produces and sells mushroom seeds to farmers but also processes mushrooms into various products like biscuits, bread, samosa, and cookies. Additionally, the company produces eco-friendly charcoal briquettes from expired mushroom seeds and other agricultural waste, contributing to environmental conservation and reducing reliance on tree-based charcoal.

Philemon’s contributions to sustainable agriculture have been recognized with several accolades, including award from Rwanda’s Ministry of Youth and Culture, together with UNDP and KOICA, through French embassy in Rwanda and non government organization called vitagora Philemon Hatangimana has been selected to conduct mentorship to other young entrepreneurs in Rwanda . His innovative practices have earned him a spot in the prestigious Ashoka Visionary Program with partnership of Mott foundation, where he has honed his skills in system change, collaboration, and leveraging innovative advisory support.

Under Philemon’s leadership, Philemon Farm Enterprise has trained over 500 young men and women, transforming them into successful mushroom farmers. The enterprise also supplies energy-efficient charcoal briquettes to more than 35,000 farmers, promoting sustainable energy use and environmental protection. Through these efforts, Philemon is making a substantial impact on combating malnutrition, creating employment opportunities, and advancing climate change solutions in Rwanda and beyond.

Philemon Hatangimana’s vision extends to expanding his sustainable practices across East Africa, aiming to influence agricultural practices on a larger scale and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
