Jaap Schut

Dr. Jaap Schut is an experienced and passionate innovator, consultant, mentor, and materials scientist dedicated to driving success for startups and corporate innovators.
As the CEO and founder of 4E Innovation Consulting, he specializes in accelerating growth and de-risking innovation pathways, guiding clients through customer discovery, value proposition building, business modeling, new product development, and sustainability strategies.
With 23 years of professional experience—including roles as a global innovation consultant, startup mentor, corporate innovator, and polymer materials researcher—Dr. Schut’s work spans critical sectors like chemicals, materials, bioplastics, cleantech, energy, healthcare, and medical devices.
In addition to his consulting practice, Dr. Schut holds multiple roles at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he is an entrepreneur-in-residence at Kickstart Venture Services, cleantech lecturer at E3P, and adjunct professor and faculty advisor at the Kenan-Flagler Business School in the STAR MBA program.
Recently trained as an NSF I-Corps Instructor, he is committed to empowering startups through lean startup methodologies, customer discovery, and experiential learning.
Dr. Schut contributes to innovation ecosystems through collaborations with UIDP and UICollab, and also serves as an expert witness in polymer-related patent litigation and personal injury cases.
He previously served as VP for New Business Development at PACE Business Partners, a European materials science consultancy firm.
Based in North Carolina, Dr. Schut earned his M.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, his Ph.D. in Polymeric Materials and Composites from INSA Lyon, France and he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in polymers for implantable medical devices at Rutgers University, NJ, USA.
