I am Laura Wilkinson, the co-founder of Gourmate Pet Treat Co., where I currently serve as CEO. Simultaneously, I am the Managing Director of Ōtautahi Co-lab, a dedicated food-grade contract manufacturing facility right here in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Gourmate Pet Treat Co.

I co-founded Gourmate Pet Treat Co. with Steph Mearns, driven by a mission to create the highest quality, human food-grade dog treats from locally and fairly sourced raw proteins in New Zealand.

My Role and Vision: As Co-founder and CEO, I have been instrumental in establishing our commitment to quality, health, and ethical business practices. The brand was born from my own passion for animals and interest in dog training and food production.
Ethical Leadership: Under my leadership, Gourmate became a certified B Corporation, a significant recognition of our commitment to social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. These core values have been central to the business since we launched in 2020.
Growth and Expansion: Our products, which include freeze-dried treats and health ranges, are batch freeze-dried in Ōtautahi Christchurch. We have successfully expanded our presence both within New Zealand and internationally, reaching markets in North America, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and the UAE.

Ōtautahi Co-lab

My commitment to the food industry extends to my role as Managing Director of Ōtautahi Co-lab, a contract manufacturing facility that specialises in freeze-drying, dehydration, milling, and packing.
Operational Focus: Located in Christchurch, Ōtautahi Co-lab provides essential services to food and pet food businesses (including Gourmate), ensuring products are manufactured to stringent human food-grade standards. I have a passion to support new product development and support many businesses bring their ideas to fruition
Leadership and Growth: My directorship, starting in 2024 highlights my expertise in food production, operational management, and growing businesses within the local Christchurch ecosystem.

Based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, I am an active advocate for the local business innovation ecosystem, accessing programmes and funding to build capability and stronger governance within my ventures. I believe businesses are stronger together, and I enjoy being approachable and encouraging to other startups.

My journey is a testament to my dedication to creating premium, values-driven products and supporting the manufacturing infrastructure that enables other New Zealand food and pet food businesses to succeed.
