Matthew Clarke

alfred deakin professor matthew clarke is acting deputy vice-chancellor (research) at deakin university. he leads a portfolio that includes deakin research, deakin research innovations, manufutures, the institute for frontier materials (ifm), the institute for intelligent systems research and innovation and the applied ai institute (a2i2) as well as oversight of four additional research institutes and seven strategic research and innovation centres.

prior to his appointment, professor clarke was pro vice-chancellor researcher development and foundation head of the school of humanities and social sciences at deakin.

an australian fullbright scholar alumnus, professor clarke is an economist who specialises in international development. his research explores aid allocation, poverty measurement, children with disabilities and professional practice of non-government organisations. professor clarke holds an international reputation for his leading work on the intersection of religion and development in the pacific region. he has published over 120 journal articles and book chapters, authored or co-authored eight monographs, edited or co-edited 11 volumes and received over $3.5 million in external grants and research funding.
