Philomena Amaka Okechukwu

i philomena amaka okechukwu, an msc student of project management in salford business school, manchester, united kingdom. during my undergraduate years, i studied history & strategic studies at the university of lagos, akoka lagos nigeria from 2004 to 2008 and shortly after commenced my career in banking with first city monument bank ltd (fcmb), ikoyi, lagos, nigeria as a marketing associate and a relationship manager. this role made me develop an interest in entrepreneurship, management, marketing and sales and this has been the field i have been in since i joined the banking industry.
after about 8 years with fcmb, i moved to united bank for africa (uba) in october 2019 as a relationship manager and after 1 year, i was given a role of a profit center manager, (pcm), (unit head, retail banking, marketing and sales division) of my branch in october, 2020. as a unit head i oversee about five staff and my key role is to drive sales through marketing of the bank’s products to potential customers. this role has been both challenging and rewarding as i have had to learn managerial skills on the job and to increase in my emotional intelligence skills for me to be an effective team lead.
my new leadership role has given me an insight into the world of management, marketing, sales and entrepreneurship as we interact daily with different entrepreneurs and business owners in a bid to sell our bank’s products and services. it has also created the desire to become an entrepreneur in the nearest future which is why i look forward to attending this programme as i know it will enhance my knowledge as well as beneficial to me.
