Samuel Niiwo: Visionary Leader in Entrepreneurship, Financial Inclusion, and Social Transformation
Samuel Niiwo, a native of Buyende, Uganda, is an accomplished entrepreneur, social innovator, and advocate for financial inclusion and community development. With over 20 years of experience, he has played a transformative role in empowering underserved communities and driving socio-economic change across Africa. As CEO of the Uganda National Entrepreneurship Development Institute (UNEDI), Samuel has launched initiatives promoting financial inclusion and sustainable business growth, particularly in rural areas.
Vision and Mission
Samuel envisions an Africa where people recognize their self-worth and can participate in global and local economic development. His mission focuses on fostering mindset reformation and empowering communities with the spirit of entrepreneurship, guided by Biblical principles. He believes integrating entrepreneurial education and financial literacy into all learning systems is essential for overcoming personal and societal barriers and addressing Africa’s challenges.
Key Initiatives and Impact
Samuel has driven impactful initiatives, including:
Village Entrepreneurship Learning Associations (VELAs): This social enterprise initiative provides culturally relevant entrepreneurship education in rural areas, empowering households to practice sustainable business acumen.
Finance Literacy and Entrepreneurship Extension Training (FLEET): Reaching thousands, FLEET equips individuals with crucial skills in money management, business planning, and financial decision-making, helping them build sustainable businesses.
Financial Inclusion through Savings and Village Enterprises (FINISAVE): In collaboration with Finance Trust Bank, Village Power Solar Energy, and the Graça Machel Trust, Samuel co-developed this cooperative model, benefiting over 16,000 households in rural Uganda, especially empowering women.
Samuel’s initiatives have had a profound impact in Uganda, where his programs have helped over 5,000 villages, promoted savings culture, and facilitated the establishment of new commercial banks. His work also extended to addressing the aftermath of the 20-year LRA insurgency in the Teso subregion, where he supported youth and widows in rebuilding their livelihoods through entrepreneurship.
