The Art Within: A Journey Guided by Imagination
Patrick Tebogo Leballo was born in November 1966 in Mamelodi, Pretoria (now Tshwane), in
Gauteng, South Africa. Raised in a large and vibrant family—alongside his two elder sisters, his
brother, and many cousins—he grew up in a four-room home filled with shared stories, laughter,
and the quiet resilience of township life. His childhood later continued in Mabopane, where he
began his schooling. With his mother working as a domestic worker and only returning home on
weekends, Patrick was primarily raised by his father, whose presence grounded him through the
early years.
Patrick’s love for art revealed itself long before he understood its meaning. In primary school,
creative art assignments became moments of discovery. Even on days when play distracted him
from completing his homework, he improvised—collecting found objects such as broken bottle
pieces to use as tools—and transformed them into imaginative creations like handmade swords or
sculptures. These spontaneous works often earned him high marks, though at the time, he did not
yet recognize that art was his calling.
Growing up, encouragement for his talent was minimal, and praise was rare. As a result, Patrick
took his gift for granted. Only later in life, as he sought inner calm and self-guidance, did he begin to
understand that creativity was the voice that had always carried him.
Patrick’s artistic journey grew from the streets he walked. He collected cow bones, roots, burnt
wood, flowers, sands, and colorful leaves—each holding a story waiting to be shaped by his hands.
Despite working in fields unrelated to art, including hospitality (casinos), insurance, and
transportation, his mind remained with the creations waiting for him at home. This inner pull
eventually grew too strong to ignore. Restless yet inspired, he made the courageous decision to
leave traditional employment and pursue art full-time.
Patrick describes himself as guided not by formal training but by intuition—an inner mentor. He
often feels called toward certain materials, sometimes resisting the impulse only to later regret not
listening. Alongside his visual art, he writes poetry that gives voice and meaning to each creation.
His poems and artworks evolved into books, while his artistic vision expanded into motivational
canvas prints, posters addressing Gender-Based Violence, and unique gift items.
His passion for social change led him to create documentaries centered on humanity and
awareness campaigns focused on substance abuse, mental wellness, and bullying. He has shared
these messages in schools, churches, corporate spaces, communities, and even in street
dialogues. This path also drew him into researching the root causes of Gender-Based Violence Though he studied Human Resources management and worked in various companies, Patrick
never attended art or writing school. Instead, he believes that art excels in him, guiding his hands,
thoughts, and purpose.
Every challenge and experience in Patrick’s life has become a stepping stone in his creative
journey. His art carries fragments of the places he has been, while his poems respond to the
images he brings to life. His work experience built discipline, confidence, and self-awareness—all
essential to his evolution as an artist, author, and content creator transitioning from indigenous
storytelling to digital expression.
