The Global Entrepreneurship Week 2024 (GEW 2024) was more than an event—it was a transformative experience that broadened my horizons, reignited my passion for innovation, and reinforced my belief in the power of entrepreneurship to change the world. Representing Botswana as a student of Botho University, I embarked on this journey with high hopes, and I’m returning with even greater resolve to contribute to my country’s growth and global innovation.
GEW 2024 began with an inspiring keynote that celebrated entrepreneurship as the driving force for global change. The energy in the room was palpable, as young entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and policymakers came together to kick off a week of collaboration and learning. We were honored by the presence and encouraging speech from US Embassy Ambassador Howard A.Van Vranken who highlighted opportunities for youth to innovate, network with the transformative space
The focus of Day 2 was on artificial intelligence (AI) and its transformative impact on business. Dr. Shiko Gitau’s insights into AI’s exponential growth were both enlightening and motivational. Mr. Mmetla Masire from Okavango Diamond Company delved into AI’s potential in the diamond supply chain, emphasizing transparency and ethical sourcing. Mr. Lesogo Mathware brought a critical perspective on entrepreneurial ethics, reminding us of the importance of responsibility in innovation.
Agriculture took center stage on Day 3, with discussions on how technology is reshaping this essential industry. Kabelo Moroka from Brastorne shared groundbreaking solutions, like USSD-based agritech platforms that bring innovation to neglected areas. Dr. Murty Indrakanti introduced us to agri-drones and data analytics, while Cliff Dlamini emphasized sustainable agriculture through technology. These discussions sparked new ideas for an ongoing hydroponics project that I'm involved in, pushing me to think about integrating advanced technology to improve efficiency and scalability.
On Day 4, we visited the University of Botswana’s biodiesel lab where Prof. Edward Dintwa and his team showcased the potential of biodiesel as an emerging fuel industry. A fireside chat with Mr. Mooketsi and Prof. Masire explored the university’s newly launched Innovation Center, bridging academic research with real-world applications. Later, a virtual session by Prof. Dimakatso Polokelo on “Ethics in AI” emphasized the need for responsible innovation, a theme that resonated deeply throughout the week.
Jeff Hoffman’s session on Day 5 was nothing short of inspiring. His insights into entrepreneurial success underscored the importance of vision, resilience, and boldness—qualities that every entrepreneur must cultivate to thrive.
Day 6 The final day began with a breakfast hosted by AIC at the Botswana Innovation Hub, where I engaged in meaningful conversations with stakeholders and industry leaders. One of my most impactful moments was speaking with Dave Fenton, whose advice on aligning my vision with my goals left a lasting impression. His words, “You can be the one to bring change to the world,” have become a mantra as I move forward. Reconnecting with Prof. Masire and other leaders reinforced the importance of community and collaboration in entrepreneurship.
GEW 2024 has equipped me with valuable insights, actionable ideas and a renewed sense of purpose. For Botswana, I envision integrating AI into industries like diamonds and agriculture to enhance transparency, efficiency, and sustainability. The hydroponics project will now incorporate advanced technology drawing from the lessons learned during the week.
On a global scale, I am inspired to contribute to conversations about ethical innovation, ensuring that advancements in AI, agritech and other fields benefit all communities equitably. I also plan to empower more young women in tech and entrepreneurship, creating a supportive ecosystem for them to thrive
While GEW 2024 showcased incredible advancements, it also highlighted several challenges:
Many young entrepreneurs struggle to access the resources needed to scale their ideas. Also Bridging the gap between tech-savvy and neglected communities remains a significant challenge. However, as AI and other technologies advance, ensuring responsible use and avoiding unintended consequences are critical. Additionally Creating structures for cross-border collaboration in innovation needs more attention.
Addressing these issues will require collective effort, inclusive policies and a commitment to fostering sustainable and ethical innovation.
As I reflect on this incredible week, I am reminded of the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones, taking risks and daring to dream big. GEW 2024 was not just an event but a catalyst for change—a reminder that as entrepreneurs, we have the power to shape the future.
