Can you believe camp is almost coming to a close?! This week we’re focusing on project implementation to really highlight the skills that we have learned the past two weeks at camp. The groups were able to pre-select their teammates based off of their interests within STEAM fields. Our thinking caps are DEFINITELY on as we continue to implement projects using creativity and a variety of light/gas/water sensors, computer coding, and mapping skills.
What’s a product, though, if it’s not marketable?! The AOL Foundation has joined us this week to discuss digital marketing and product pitching. With just a few days left of camp, these sessions truly have helped our campers understand how important it is to be able to speak clearly, confidently, and concisely about the project coming to life.
WiSci’s got talent! On Monday evening we had our talent show where our campers took the stage to perform! We had 12 acts total with a mixture of dancing, singing, poetry reading, and modeling. Campers also got to relax in the evenings with fun movie nights.
Girl Up finished up its final leadership workshops with activities surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals and Advocacy in Action. Girls played a matching game to discover the next set of UN global goals, simultaneously brainstorming solutions on how their countries can meet these goals. The following day we met in country delegations to map out strategies on how to make community change and influence national policy.
To get a break from campus, on Wednesday afternoon we visited a local fish farm, approximately a fifteen minute drive away. Here, we learned that Rwanda has a fish shortage and actually has to import its fish from Uganda. This farm is doing great work to build up this industry, raising fingerlings to sell to other farmers. Campers enjoyed a farm animal scavenger hunt and enjoyed friendly competition through games!
