Monday was our first day of class! We kicked off with breakfast and a pre-assessment test to get a sense of current knowledge in computer programming, game design, and soft skills. Following that, Microsoft led off the first week of camp with an introduction to Kodu, a computer-based software with new visual programming language made specifically to create games. With a ratio of 2 girls to 1 laptop, the girls spent the
morning exploring this new ‘language’ in hands-on computer and technology workshops.
With time between classes, meals, and activities, campers connected with their families and friends. Other campers used this time for extra curricular activities such as sports and games. (It looks like we may have a running club, football club, and yoga club on our hands!) Other girls used this time to create their cohort banners, their first team-building activity as a cohort, deciding on a name, visual representation and description of the group to present to the other campers. (Each cohort is made up of 10 campers)
While our campers witnessed a beautiful Rwandan traditional dance at the Opening Ceremony, the following day, they were able to learn it! A Gashora Girls Academy staff member gave the campers the opportunity to participate in the local dance. (We could hear them singing from the camp office!)
Following the dance session, dinner was served family style and led into trivia night. While our staff and counselors graded all of the trivia, a major dance party broke out!
Lights were out by 10:00pm.
