About GEN in Mozambique

GEN began working in Mozambique in 2010 when it partnered with Empresa Junior to launch the country’s inaugural Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) campaign. It was an immediate success with the nascent entrepreneurial community. During the following years, the campaign grew into an annual November fixture, drawing national institutions into its programming and setting a pattern of public and private participation that would shape GEN's engagement in the country for more than a decade.

As the campaign matured, GEN's coalition grew. IdeiaLab, a Maputo-based incubator and accelerator founded in 2010, coordinated GEW events throughout Mozambique. The National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) developed the National Entrepreneurship Conference into a centerpiece of the country's GEW celebrations, pairing it with a national entrepreneurship fair that gave founders a recurring platform to exchange ideas and connect with markets.

As GEW grew into a nationwide platform, GEN appointed Juscelina Guirengane—a business consultant, university lecturer, and chief executive of Sahane Consultoria e Serviços—to carry GEN’s work forward on a year-round basis. Together with Flávio Quembo, a former president and current board member of ANJE who coordinates the GEW campaign, they connect the country's founders and young enterprises to markets, mentorship, and the wider GEN community. This work directly aligns with the government’s stated goal of helping Mozambican entrepreneurs start and grow competitive, sustainable businesses.

GEN produces GEW in Mozambique as an open, nationwide campaign, inviting schools, universities, neighborhoods, districts, and provinces to organize their own events alongside the marquee Conference. A consistent thread through GEN’s work in Mozambique is youth entrepreneurship, reflecting its partners' focus on moving young Mozambicans from informal activity into registered, growth-oriented businesses. GEN reinforces that emphasis through the conference, fair, and community events that anchor each year's campaign.

Government engagement is another cornerstone of GEN's work in the country. Senior ministers have actively participated in GEW and GEN events, including Oldemiro Baloi (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Fernando Sumbana Júnior (Minister of Youth and Sports), and Armando Inroga (Minister of Industry and Trade). Government leaders have frequently taken the podium at the conference during GEW, such as former Minister of Labor Vitória Diogo, who championed entrepreneurship as a vital platform for economic growth and job creation.

GEN connects Mozambican founders to its global platforms, including the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC)—its annual gathering of ecosystem builders, investors, and policymakers—and the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC), a global pitch competition GEN launched in 2019 to provide founders with training, mentorship, and investor exposure. Through these channels, Mozambican founders, such as Precidónio Uamusse of BIOTV, have successfully participated in the wider GEN community through the GEN Starters Club.

GEN has collaborated with and drawn recognition from a wide range of Mozambican institutions, including ANJE, Empresa Junior, and ideiaLab, as well as government ministries spanning Foreign Affairs, Youth and Sports, Industry and Trade, and Labor. By design, GEW reaches well beyond Maputo, encouraging schools, communities, districts, and provinces across the country to host their own events during the global week.

GEN has recognized Mozambique's growing role in its global community by naming Juscelina Guirengane a GEN Global Leader, honoring the pivotal role she has played in building GEN’s national network. As GEN continues to widen its footprint across Mozambique and deepen its year-round programming, its goal remains to transition Mozambicans into formal, growth-oriented enterprises, strengthen the ties between local founders and regional or global markets, and connect the country's entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks, capital, and policy support they need to scale.
