Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Global Entrepreneurship Network is excited to announce the opening of a new Startup Huddle chapter in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to support the growth of the local startup community while crowdsourcing advice and support for its entrepreneurs. Freetown joins a global network of more than 60 Startup Huddle chapters worldwide, having successfully hosted their first event on January 28th.
In addition to providing direct support to entrepreneurs, the Startup Huddle program addresses a critical element of success for all entrepreneurial ecosystems – connectivity. According to GEN research, startup communities with higher levels of local connectedness translate to an increased number of startups, and founders with high levels of connectivity grow their revenue twice as fast as those with lower levels.
“Freetown’s startup ecosystem is growing, but many founders still face barriers such as limited networks, insufficient mentorship, and fragmented support systems. Startup Huddle provides a consistent, safe, and supportive environment where entrepreneurs can present challenges, receive honest feedback, and build relationships that accelerate their growth. It is important for Freetown because it strengthens the culture of collaboration, learning, and innovation that our city urgently needs,” says local organizer Aminata Kane.
At each Startup Huddle event, local founders give six-minute presentations outlining challenges facing their companies. Each presentation is followed by a 20-minute conversation with an audience of peers, mentors, educators, and advisers who provide constructive criticism focused on finding solutions and increasing founder know-how. With new founders cycling through each gathering, and previous presenters joining the audience to give back, the community continues to expand while connections deepen.
“Our dream is to see a vibrant, supportive community of founders who are not just building businesses but building each other. We aim to spotlight at least 24 entrepreneurs, develop a pool of committed mentors, foster new partnerships, and contribute to a stronger, more connected startup ecosystem in Sierra Leone. Ultimately, we want Startup Huddle Freetown to become a trusted home for founders, a place where ideas grow, challenges are shared, and solutions are co-created,” Kane says.
