Uganda's Business Recovery Series 2023, a collaborative initiative between Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEW) Uganda and Enterprise Uganda, continues to empower entrepreneurs and business owners amidst the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent webinar, titled "Unlocking Success in Organic Farming: Strategies and Opportunities," Chariton Namuwoza, the Executive Director of the National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU), shared invaluable insights and practical advice on the growth, development, and potential of the organic farming sector.

Kicking off the webinar, Ronald Mukasa, Director of Research, Innovation, and Learning, set the stage by providing an overview of the Business Recovery Series and its objective of assisting businesses in overcoming economic challenges. The webinar served as a platform for entrepreneurs to address critical concerns and acquire actionable advice.

Chariton Namuwoza, a prominent figure with over a decade of experience, captivated the audience with an in-depth discussion on the strategies and opportunities within the organic farming industry. As the Executive Director of NOGAMU, Namuwoza highlighted the network's significant role in uniting over 360 organizations, including producers, processors, exporters, and support entities, for the promotion of organic agriculture in Uganda. With a membership base of more than 2 million smallholder organic farmers, of which 404,000 are already certified, NOGAMU has been instrumental in driving the sector's progress.

Namuwoza delved into the definitions of organic agriculture, emphasizing its reliance on ecological processes, biodiversity, and adapted cycles to sustain soil, ecosystems, and communities. Drawing from global trends, he highlighted the increasing demand for organic products, driven by concerns regarding food safety, health, environment, climate change, and social issues. According to recent figures, global sales of organic products reached a staggering 125 billion euros in 2021, up from 80 billion euros in 2018.

Uganda's organic farming sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with organic exports reaching US$159 million in 2021, up from US$50 million in 2016/2017. The number of certified farmers has also soared to 404,246, and certified projects/companies now exceed 70, encompassing various product categories such as crops, dairy, poultry, aquaculture, and more. Namuwoza highlighted the positive strides made in the policy and regulatory environment, creating a favorable landscape for organic farming in the country.

The presentation emphasized the myriad of opportunities within the organic farming sector. Namuwoza identified key areas such as processing and exporting/trading, farming and trading activities, retailing, hospitality, and tourism, as well as inputs and other services. Opportunities abound for entrepreneurs to engage in the production and trade of organic coffee, fruits, cocoa, oil crops, spices, and more. Collaboration with supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, farmers' markets, schools, and eco-tourism establishments further expands the prospects for retailing and hospitality ventures. Additionally, a range of opportunities exists for manufacturers, distributors, agents, trainers, and service providers, including inspection/certification services, transportation, warehousing, and product testing.

To capitalize on these opportunities, Namuwoza outlined several strategies for success in the organic farming sector. Entrepreneurs were advised to identify areas of interest and passion, seek guidance from organic experts, and engage in capacity building through initiatives like the NOGAMU Academy. Obtaining organic certification through recognized systems, focusing on innovation, product development, and effective marketing, as well as joining associations and networks to access finance and gain exposure, were also recommended.

In conclusion, the webinar provided a comprehensive overview of the potential of organic farming in Uganda. Namuwoza's expertise shed light on the social, economic, and environmental benefits of organic agriculture. Entrepreneurs were encouraged to seize the vast opportunities within the sector, leveraging strategies to position themselves as key players in this dynamic industry.

Uganda's Business Recovery Series 2023 continues to serve as a beacon of hope and empowerment for businesses recovering from the impacts of COVID-19. Through collaborations with influential figures like Chariton Namuwoza and organizations such as NOGAMU, GEW Uganda remains committed to providing valuable knowledge and support to entrepreneurs as they navigate the path to success in the organic farming sector.
