Ecothon seeks to foster eco-entrepreneurship and to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (the "SDGs") by gathering and supporting innovative business ideas to become feasible solutions. Among the 17 goals of SDGs, the Ecothon brings to focus SDG 12, 'Responsible Consumption and Production', aiming at discovering innovative business models that concern a ‘sustainability’ as the most important value.
During the program, the present and future entrepreneurs with SCP related business ideas competed online with other participants based on growth with the expert mentors and professional social innovation startup coaches. The participants connected with the mentors and other participants as well as develop their own sustainable business model. The event was first launched in Cambodia last year and this year's events were held virtually in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Cambodia, Ecothon was co-organized by ASEM SMEs Eco Innovation Center, Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Korea), Hanns Seidel Foundation, Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (Cambodia), The Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Center (MAGIC) and GEN Cambodia.
During the program in Cambodia, 10 eco-entrepreneur teams participated with a passionate attitude. This program provided to the winning team not only the prize but also an opportunity to participate COMEUP program.
The 3 winners are as below:
- EcoBuddy: Provide a mobile platform for eco-conscious consumers to serve the eco-friend lifestyle
- Criche: Produce healthy and sustainable food from crickets
- JUNLEN: Upcycle organic waste to fertilizer through earthworm to increase more incomes for small size farmers
