About the Launch

The official Global Entrepreneurship Week launch is held in partnership with the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. The two-day event includes the official opening of GEW with highlights from national campaign leaders from around the world, as well as the launch of Thunderbird's A. Masrin Center for Global Entrepreneurship and Family Business. The center is named after Thunderbird alumnus, Jimmy Masrin, the president, director and CEO of PT Caturkarsa Megatunggal based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The GEW launch will be among the first of 40,000 activities taking place across 200 countries aimed at making it easier for anyone, anywhere to start and scale a company.

Global Entrepreneurship Week reaches beyond high-tech startup hubs like Silicon Valley, London and Shanghai – envisioning one entrepreneurial ecosystem open to all, including smaller cities in emerging economies and under-represented communities, whether systemically marginalized, geographically hard-to-reach or otherwise pushed aside or left out.

Phoenix, named one of the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems in the 2021 Global Startup Ecosystem Report from GEN and Startup Genome, has a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem -- ranking in the top half near large international hubs like Frankfurt, Mexico City, Milan and Moscow.

The event will also shine a spotlight on Phoenix Global Rising, a new initiative with the City of Phoenix and Mayor Kate Gallego aimed at making the Valley of the Sun a global business player and an inclusive, sustainable smart city.

Speakers include:

  • Jonathan Ortmans, President, Global Entrepreneurship Network
  • Kate Gallego, Mayor of Phoenix
  • Sanjeev Khagram, Dean of the Thunderbird School of Management
  • Rebeca Hwang, Senior Director for the Masrin Center + Member of the GEN Board of Directors
  • Kizito Okechukwu, GEW South Africa
  • Marcus Dantus, GEW Mexico
  • Global Entrepreneurship Week hosts from around the world.
