In the lead up to #GEW2017, the GEN Global team is sharing a number of top 10 lists in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of GEW. This week we're looking at the Top 10 Entrepreneurial Cities in the World, ranked by the 2016 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER), released by Startup Genome in partnership with the Global Entrepreneurship Network, is an annual report that analyzes a variety of economic factors and how they affect the success of startup ecosystems around the globe.

After careful analysis, these 10 cities topped the list in large part due to their massive network of active and mature startups, their resources and their impressive pools of local and international talent. Two new arrivals to the top 10 list include the Chinese megacities of Beijing and Shanghai. Let’s take a closer look at what made these 10 cities stand out from the rest:

  1. Silicon Valley, United States
    Silicon Valley stands as the dominant global startup ecosystem with 12,700-15,600 active startups and 2 million tech workers. It’s record of success is unparalleled.

  2. New York City, United States
    New York City is the second largest startup ecosystem in the world, and has one of the highest net Global Resource Attraction rates. It also considered a melting pot of ideas and opportunities.

  3. London, United Kingdom
    London is considered Europe’s largest tech startup ecosystem. The city has great access to investors and talent in different areas of expertise.

  4. Beijing, China
    Beijing is home to Asia’s largest startup ecosystem. The city has 70 colleges and universities and over 280 scientific research institutes. It also has strong foreign and government funding.

  5. Boston, United States
    Boston is a leader on the global scale of startup ecosystems because of its maturity and capability of producing successful disruptive innovations. It is also home to famous universities such as Harvard and MIT.

  6. Tel Aviv, Israel
    Tel Aviv has one of the highest #startup densities in the world. Tel Aviv’s startup ecosystem is special because it has over 300 research and development centers, and is highly specialized in important industries such as cybersecurity.

  7. Berlin, Germany
    Berlin continues to improve in the international startup ecosystem rankings because of its affordability, inclusivity, and diversity. The city has the 3rd highest Visa Acceptance rate, making it a popular place for international talent.

  8. Shanghai, China
    Shanghai is a new city to make the Top 10 for best startup cities. The megacity is well-connected globally, and has had some of the best funding results, market reach, and collective valuation of its ecosystem’s startups.

  9. Los Angeles, United States
    Los Angeles is a great city for startups because of its high graduation rate of talented software engineers and a supportive government. The famed Elon Musk and company Snap, Inc. work out of this Southern California city.

  10. Seattle, United States
    Seattle is home to tech giants Microsoft and Amazon. The city’s #startup ecosystem is so successful because of its highly experienced founders, strong partnership with Silicon Valley, and steady inflow of venture capital.
